A Stroll In The Park
at 00:03:31

Interesting fact that no one seems to have mentioned - we have won our last four away games without conceding.

Saints At Sheffield United The Verdict
at 15:34:27

The defence is so weak that we have let in one goal in the last four matches (including the cup) ! I think that we are in a better position as far as attack is concerned, and that will take off some of the pressure in defence. I think, though, that we could cut out some of the passing from keeper to central defender, who sometimes is in no position to take the pass.

Forster has reminded us (if we needed reminding) that if he gets down to save low shots, he seldom catches them, but just pushes the ball back into play, rather than pushing the ball sideways or out for a corner. Trouble is we gave him such a long contract.

Angus Gunn Can Be Pickford's Successor !
at 11:33:07

It's unlikely that Southgate would think of picking Gunn with only a handful of appearances to his name. I am not sure if he or McCarthy is Hasenhutl's long term choice anyway.

Saints V Everton The Verdict

The only weakness was Cedric having to fill in at left back when Targett had to come off. He constantly had to turn back to manoeuver the ball on to his right foot. Hopefully, there is time now for Bertrand or Targett to play on the left next time.

Saints V Manchester City The Verdict
at 11:29:10

Just when Redmond has been playing well, and the best player to have a go and run at defenders, he is left out. He should have started with Ings. Armstrong should have played instead of Lemina who was slow of thought and of action. Nick complains about the defence, but no one was holding the ball further up the pitch to give them any respite. In the second half it looked like men against 13 year olds.

Also, playing the league champions was not the game to give a player his debut.

McCarthy vs Forster? No contest. McCarthy more agile getting down, better coming out crosses. Should have come into the side long before he did.

Where Is The Central Defensive Signing ?
at 17:17:51

Like some posters here, I can't agree that a central defender is the biggest priority. I think that Hoedt was signed as VVD's replacement, anticipating his move out. Hoedt and Yoshida need to have a run of games together. For all his criticism, Yoshida often looks like the one to score at set pieces.
The priority is a tall striker. None of the attacking players are getting on the end of the many crosses, which are just wasted. Another Rickie please.

A Crucal Week For Pellegrino But Are His Problems Of His Own Making !
at 17:45:28

I agree with Sanguin. Can't keeping sacking managers. The advantage of rotating is that the whole squad feels they belong. The disadvantage is that a player who has had a good game can still be dropped ( or rested as the manager would have it).

Re the VVD situation, the club was determined to not be criticised for being a selling club any more by keeping him to his contract (or a bit more of it). Now, do you keep him playing at less than 100%, or reduce his value by not playing him at all. His playing style has always been of graceful elegance, and in view of what went on in the summer, maybe it just looks like he is giving less than 100%. He wasn't perfect before, anyway.

Saints At Bournemouth The Verdict

Can't agree with your comment that on his day, there aren't many better keepers in the PL than Forster. Yes, he has had a couple of good matches, and has done well to keep the ball out of the net on occasions, but always has a tendency to parry away shots that are fairly close to him, when he could well be gathering them in his hands. He actually catches very little. What do others think?

Saints V Brighton The Verdict

As usual, Yoshida is the first one named in Nick's report, even when he doesn't play!

Re Forster, a lot of fans have been moaning at his disability to get down quickly enough for the low shots, but now we find he can't get across and up to soft ones in the top corner.

Nick, as most have said, leave Yoshida alone. He has improved so much that it genuinely is a case of perm any two from three. On the Forster issue, where would you rank him out of the regular Premier League goalkeepers?

Saints V West Bromwich Albion The Verdict
at 09:58:47

Can't agree with your general sentiments about the game. If we have a poor first half and a good second, then people only remember the second half. Yesterday was the other way round. In that first half, we created many chances, and on another occasion, Yoshida's downward header, and the shot that hit the post, would have both gone in.

Nick, you are still being defensive about FF. His handling and decision-making doesn't inspire confidence for the defenders or the supporters.

Pellegrino Has To Make Decisive Defensive Selection !
at 10:58:07

The manager has come into the club with an impossible situation on his hands. The club has made it clear the VVD was not for sale in order to show a stronger hand than in the past, when we have just left Liverpool (mainly) to take who they want. Having made that very public stand, the club management would expect him to be playing, otherwise they would seem to be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Having made their point, I expect VVD to be sold, if not in January, at the end of the season. Hoedt needs to be patient for a short while, then he will be first choice.

Vote For The Ultimate Saints Team

As people's memories vary according to when they started watching football, perhaps it would be more meaningful to chose a different team from each decade. Then, very few of the better players would be left out.
