Collins Not Ruling Out Championship Return
Collins Not Ruling Out Championship Return

On-loan Town defender Danny Collins has refused to rule out a move to a Championship club next month. Collins’s temporary stint at Portman Road is due to end after Saturday’s home clash with Derby and he will report back to Stoke for training on Monday.

But the 31-year-old Welsh international, who has contributed three goals in 15 appearances for Paul Jewell’s side, does not expect to remain at the Britannia Stadium beyond next month.

His contract may run until the summer of 2013 but Collins admitted: “I expect to move on and will be looking to get away in January.”

Jewell is keen to sign Collins on a permanent basis and despite interest from Wolves the player did nothing to discourage Town from making him an offer.

He added: “I’m never going to say no. The Premier League is not the be-all and end-all. Of course I would consider offers from Championship clubs.

“The offer would have to be right but what matters most is being happy where you are and with how things are going.”

Collins has made 57 appearances for Stoke since a £2.75 million from Sunderland in August 2009 but has reached a stage in his career where he clearly feels a move would be of benefit.

He said: “I will go back to Stoke after the game on Saturday and see what happens. I have spoken with my agent and hopefully other clubs will show an interest.

“Before the window opens you get clubs looking at which departments they want to improve and it all depends on which clubs contact my agent.”

Collins is keen to depart on a winning note and believes Town’s blistering second-half show at Barnsley will act as a real fillip going into the visit from a Derby side who suffered five straight defeats before recording a draw and a win in their most recent outings.

He added: “The Championship is incredibly tight and after the win at Barnsley it would be nice to follow it up with another and to get two or three on the bounce. There’s no question that last week’s win has been terrific for confidence.”
