Saints Announce Record Crowd For Saturday's Game
Saints Announce Record Crowd For Saturday's Game
Wednesday, 25th Apr 2012 18:58

Done let anyone tell you that Saints arent a club thats ahead of its time ! They have just announced that there will be a new record crowd for the visit of Coventry City, a full four days before the game.

Saints previous record attendance at St Mary's before this season was the 32,151 who watched us play Arsenal in 2003, during our last stint in the Premier there were many games were every ticket was sold in the ground including corporate sales, but this was the biggest of the lot.

For the visit of West Ham earlier in the season shortly before the end of the game it was announced that this was a record attendance at St Mary's, with many hearing the crowd given as 32,150, one short of the Arsenal numbers, this was hastily changed at some point in the hours after the game to ensure it was in fact a record.

For Saturday it seems they are taking no chances by announcing that it will be a record crowd, although at this stage they dont seem to have decided by just how many, of course the club may well feel that they have sold more tickets than the previous records, so are comfortable in telling the World that before kick off, in fact they are so confident they have stated that it will exceed 32,300, almost 150 more than the other two records, just where they have found the extra 150 seats from is anyones guess.

In truth St Mary's has around 300- 400 more seats than it can fill on a match day when taking into account segregation and disabled spaces at the front that are often not filled, perhaps they are cutting the width of the segregation net and utilising some of those seats reserved for disabled fans, either wa 150 supporters will feel happy about it as they have got tickets that they previously wouldnt have.

When they give the attendance at each match, I don't know if it is counted by the number of turnstile clicks, or by adding the static no. of season tickets to the match-day tickets sold. If the latter is the case, anyone who is ill on the day and hasn't had a chance to hand over the ticket to someone else, is still counted.

They used to announce the size of the crowd after the other results, when three-quarters had left the ground. Now they don't seem to do it at all.

I love a full house at St Mary's. I dream of the day when we can fill it every week and get that extra tier we once talked of.

I hope Saturday's bumper crowd get behind the lads from the off. People will inevitably be checking what's happening at Upton Park, but ultimately they shouldn't transpose any bad news there onto our players. We need to patient when things don't go our way.

Like everyone else I love to see the stadium full, but there are two things that irritate, 1. those that don't attend except Pmuff games and the last game who leave it until 10 mins after kick off to find their seats and then disturb everyone 15 mins before halftime to go to the bar and 2. the catering never speeds up to cope with exta numbers!! or am I just a grumpy old fart?

Isn't the official capacity over 32,600? For the game on Saturday, do we really need several hundred empty seats to separate the 2 sets of fans? What's the point in having those seats if they are never going to be used?

I wonder how many tickets they could have sold for this game? My guess is 45,000.

It's always a great sight seeing the ground full. Like being in a full theatre, a special atmosphere is created. I agree with dirk-doone - a line of stewards without the netting would suffice this time. Of course, all the seats are used from time to time, as the netting is moved along to suit the situation.

Over and above the late arrivers and hungry half timers, the biggest irritation surely has to be the early leavers!!
Who goes to the cinema and leaves before the plot is revealed?
Do they leave work early just to make sure they get the first bus?
How the hell can you leave a football game when, time and time again something exciting or game changing happens in the last minutes?
With the atmosphere of a full house you can only get the best value for your ticket by watching all of the show and hey, don't worry, there will be another bus along in a minute

Yep - you wouldn't leave the cinema with 5 mins to go, you wouldn't turn off the game on TV with 5 mins to go, so why do so many people leave the game with 5 mins to go? Seems very odd - if people want to avoid the traffic so much then why go at all.... I left a game early only once (not a Saints game) - at Loftus Road with a QPR fan and his Dad who wanted to go and avoid the traffic - and we missed a last minute winner.. I'm over from Asia for the run in - I wont be leaving early on Sat.. I just hope I'm celebrating though!

The strangest exodus I saw was when we played Man City last at Maine Road - 2001? - the year they were last relegated.
We went 0ne nil up and with 10 minutes to play the home fans streamed out and at 90 mins it could only have been half full. Very odd - 1 nil down, ten mins to play, a fairly even game and relegation threatening. I wondered then and still do - would Saints fans ever do that in a similar situation.

I remember that awful cup replay at the Dell many years ago when we got stuffed out of sight (was it Spuds or Liverpool? Bad memories I allow to fade).
When we were trailing by so many that it was obvious we were never going to get back into it, my son who was about 8 at the time said "can we go now Dad?".
I replied rather irritatedly "Son, You NEVER, NEVER leave a football match early, do you understand?".
When the next goal went in and we were even further out of sight, he just looked at me and said nothing!!
I am pleased to say that he, his younger brother and myself have still NEVER left a football match early!!
