Heaven seven The Alan Curtis interview

Steve Mabbett: Was the Welsh International and your Uncle, Roy Paul a big influence in guiding you into a footballing career?

Alan Curtis: Umm, He was an influence in the fact that obviously he was my mother¹s brother and I was very aware of the fact that he played for Manchester City, the Swans and obviously captained Wales. He was always in the background, but like all big families, we¹d only tend to see each other at weddings and Christmas times. I wanted to be a football player since I was old enough to walk and run, I always had a ball at my feet so I always wanted to be a football player but Uncle Roy was a fantastic member of the family to look up to, and aspire to.

SM: When you joined the Swans in the early seventies what were your aspirations just ply your trade in the lower leagues, or did you really think you would be a top player with international honours?

AC: I think that¹s a difficult one. You just want to establish yourself first of all. Initially I was on trial when I first came down and there¹s all these obstacles and hurdles put in front of you, the first one obviously is to impress in the trial match to get taken on. We had four teams in those days, we had the senior league side, the Welsh league side, football combination and the first team. I didn¹t play in the senior league thank God because they tell me that was one of the roughest leagues that they¹ve ever seen! I did start off in the Welsh League side and then obviously the next thing was to get a regular in the Combination side, then you just want to push into the first team. I suppose, fortunately for me, the three steps came quite quickly and in the First team, the hardest bit is to maintain your place and become a regular which again, thankfully, I was able to do.

SM: Just before John Toshack arrived to become Swansea¹s Manager, you put in a transfer request. How did John persuade you to stay?

Is there a Nurse in the building? Ray steel talks to Mel Nurse

During the Petty crisis, JackPlug tried to arrange an interview with Mel Nurse. Because of the fast moving developments of that traumatic time, it never took place. We caught up with Mel in the club shop recently and took the opportunity to have a few words...

RS: When I was asked to interview you last year, I did a bit of research and I discovered you made your League debut in the 1955/56 season and then seemed to disappear until 1957/58.

MN: Yes, that¹s right. I went off to do my National Service as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. The Club did try to get me games during this time but it was pretty difficult as you didn¹t get much leave.

RS: One of the questions I was going to ask you was what was your worst moment in football and I bet the Editor it would be scoring the goal for Middlesborough which helped to send the Swans into the Third Division but he reckons it would be being transferred from the Swans?

The return of Soccer Sunday JackPlug talks to producer, John Roberts

TJ: Did you think Soccer Sunday would ever come back, after all the problems with ITV Digital?

JR: Strangely enough, I was always pretty confident that we would come back. One of the main reasons being that ITV, as a group of companies, were the only company that had the ability. We had the experience to cover every game in the football league, which is no mean feat. It¹s a huge operation on a Saturday. Football is being played out from about 5.15pm until 10pm in the night. It¹s an enormous commitment and not alot of companies or people could do that. Certainly there was talk of Channel Five doing it, I am not saying they couldn¹t, but they would have had to look for a broadcast partner. So yes, I was quietly confident that it would come back. Obviously the ITV Digital thing hands heavily around our shoulders, but at the end I thought common sense prevailed. Hopefully the sponsors will come on board and more importantly the fans will come on board and enjoy seeing football back on television.

TJ: There are alot of Welsh football fans living in England, does that put pressure on you to put out something that reflects Wales as a whole?

Just like watching Brazil? Phil Sumbler on the future of British football

³It¹s just like watching Brazil² A statement made by thousands of supporters up and down the country when things are doing well but it could well be what the next generation of Swansea City fans could sing all the time but how? The Swansea City Under-9s team are currently receiving a few training sessions a month in Futebol de Salão. But what exactly is this new technique? Well, for a start it¹s not new and if you went down to Rio de Janeiro and asked some of Brazil¹s most famous footballing sons they would attribute much of their success to this.
