Shane Long Wins Club's Goal Of The Season Award
Thursday, 21st May 2015 11:15

If the season's awards dinner had been held a week earlier then Shane Long would have had a gap in his trophy cabinet this morning.

Luckily for Shane Long that the club's season's awards dinner was held after the Aston Villa game and not before it as his wonder strike against Villa last Saturday was voted as the goal of the season in the club's annual awards.

A fitting tribute to long who has often been overlooked by some supporters despite his overall contribution to the side being crucial, not just in scoring goals or even being credited with an assist, but for his all round all action play that has often turned what has looked like an easy defensive situation for our opponents into one in which they are suddenly on the back foot.

That was the case on Saturday against Villa when Long challenged Shay Given and enables Sadio Mane to put in the loose ball for the second goal, then he followed that up with a great run and final pass to pick out Mane for his hat trick and after his two assists put in a brace of goals himself including the winner of the goal of the season where he firstly disposessed a Villa player on the half way line, took the ball forward ten yards and let fly to catch Given slightly off his line.

A fitting goal to win the award and a fitting tribute to Shane Long who has played a big part in this season, a far bigger part than some would give him credit for.

It looks better every time you see it. Win the ball, take touch, look up and assess, judge flight, distance, strength of kick and goalkeepers positioning - simply amazing level of competence under pressure.

It was no lucky fluke and Shane old lad, now if only you can do that every week!

Bit surprised with this one. Not that it wasn't a great goal but personally I went for Morgan's top corner effort after a 40 odd 'team' passing movement; this seemed to sum up the teams quality this year and importantly highlighted how Morgan knuckled down following the summer (and his undoubted quality overall). This has been his best season for Saints imo.

Shane's goal was great.
I love a overhead kick, though, so would go Pelle vs QPR

I like Pelle's first at Stoke in the League cup
