The Ugly Inside Win First Silverware Of The Season For Southampton !
Monday, 1st Aug 2016 12:48

The Ugly Inside's football team were victorious in the tournament arranged by Southampton Doing It For The Kids on Saturday afternoon.

The Ugly Inside continued its record breaking run to be the first Southampton team of the 2016/17 season to lift a trophy.

The TUI team now unbeaten since a defeat to West Ham United back in 1997 added to their victory against Spursweb in 2002 and will now head into their 20th year without a defeat in full 11 a side football.

In the semi final TUI were drawn against the team drawn from The Angel who went under the banner of Real Madras and you could not argue with that.

Although the final score was 5-1 to TUI, Real Madras were no walkovers and it was end to end stuff for most of the game, in the end fitness told and TUI spraying the ball around and making it do the work even missed a first half penalty before taking control.

So to the final, The Saints Pub team had beaten the charity's own team in the other semi final so the two pre tournament favourites met in front of fervent crowd, although most of them were in the pub opposite.

This was almost a repeat of the 2013 Southampton Sunday Senior Cup Final between Concorde & Maybush, both sides had members of both squads from 13 years in their team on Saturday and the TUI team were looking for revenge after going down to an extra time defeat at Eastleigh's ground back then.

It was another end to end game and TUI struck first blood only to be hauled back with an equaliser soon after, at this point it looked like the Saints would get on top and win the match, but they had not banked on the tactics of the TUI side who planned to sit deep and hold it tight and go on the break.

This worked wonders shortly before the break when a TUI midfielder made a glorious run got to the dead ball line and exquisitely chipped the ball across the keeper for a simple header home to make it 2-1.

The Saints team came out with all guns blazing and brought on their permitted three Under 40's with suspicion that a couple of others were either employing a superb moisturising regime or where ltying about their age.

For the first ten minutes of the second half it was backs to the wall stuff and then came the masterstroke with TUI's own wonderkid brought into the fray, within minutes the scoreline was 4-1 and there was even leeway for TUI to miss another penalty to wrap up the game.

But from then on it was a question of holding shape and seeing out the final minutes before ending 13 years of hurt and revenge for that cup final defeat.

On a serious note over £1,000 was raised on the day for Southampton Doing It For The Kids and thanks should be given by all to Tony Gailor and Tracy Cutler who put in a lot of hard work along with other members of the charity's committee.

Also a big thanks to Eugene McManus of the Saints Pub who put on a great day and who also donated the trophy and made a generous donation to the final amount raised.

Like any good day it was all about the people who were there, whether they were Players, spectators and of course those who refereed, without the good humour generated it would not have been half the fun it was.
