Saints About To Make Their First Signing Of The Summer
Friday, 22nd Jun 2018 22:11

Saints have agreed terms with Celtic for midfielder Stuart Armstrong with the club now free to negotiate with the 26-year-old over a potential move.

Saints have held a long-term interest in the Scotland international and have been linked with him over a long period in time and it has been reported by the BBC that Saints are ready to pay an initial fee of £7m for a player who has been an integral part of the Celtic side over the past 3 1/2 years although he has fallen out of favour a little this season with his desire to move South of the border..

Armstrong is nowl now begin discussing his own terms with Saints, ahead of a potential move and media reports are saying that the player is said to be keen to make.

The former Dundee United player signed a new two-year contract at Celtic last summer, and is now entering the final year of that deal, with his desire to move to the Premier League well known Celtic are keen to cash in now.

Armstrong will not be a signing that will excite Saints fans, but at 26 he has a good mixture of youth and experience and is perhaps an indication that Saints are now keen to revamp their squad after the disappointments of the last year..

Celtic fans sing his praises and it sounds as though he is could be the missing goalscoring midfielder Saints need . Better risk than injury-prone Jack Wilshire?

I have been saying for a number of years that we need a player with the engine of Steve Davis, but who can score. This guy could be that man. Just hope we can do a deal before he is poached, like Maddison.

After the debacle of last season Armstrong is definitely not the answer, we will be favourites to go down if we are selling the likes of Tadic and buying players like Armstrong,i cant think of anything positive to say so ill let some-one else have a go

He has got to be better than JWP and he scores a few goals although in a inferior league. Looks like we are now shopping in the bargain basement with this type of signing. When are we going to spend proper money to get some Class Players.

He has scored on average 1 goal in every 4 games, he wont manage that in England. However he has a chance of making it if he finds his form of 2015-16. It's no secret he struggled last season after he lost his will to play in Scotland.
It's a long time since we have signed a Scot. Let's give him a chance and a huge Saints welcome. If he does well, so do we.

Now a central defender, then a goalscoring forward and we can forget last seasons nightmare.

@petedoors1... you obviously thought VVD, Steve davis, anti niemi, and Forster were all also bargain basement signings.
But as you don’t see the value JWP brings and you clearly don’t realise Armstrong is left sided, you are not perhaps the best judge in my book. Try watching some non-english premier league for a change and broaden your mind.

I’d take signings like Armstrong, VVD, Steve Davis... over over-priced “glamour” signings like osvaldo and Carillo and day.

Probably no better than what we already have in midfield. Does this mean we are going to offload someone else as well as Tadic ?

I know nothing about this player so hard to judge.

Since we have been tracking him for so long it sort of makes sense that we finally make a serious move for him. He sounds like an all round good player who seems quite versatile and with a big engine and who can shoot from distance and find the right pass through the channels. Not necessarily a starting player; we´ll see what he brings if the deal materializes and if so I wellcome him and hope he does well.
Now a routined, proven PL central defender and a likewise striker + a replacement for Tadic if he moves on.

Ahhh Stuart Armstrong ... great song that he has ... to be fair to him he didn't do too badly at Celtic ... however he did suffer from few injuries and his off field interests ... no nothing seedy .. he is taking his law exams ..
Good engine when fit and does have an eye for goal .. but after Rogic was tied up before the World Cup then the writing was pretty much on the wall that he would be off.
ps If you haven't heard the song .. pretty sure its on youtube ... tune of Enola Gay from OMD..

What do they really mean when fans criticise the club for " no ambition "?
Do they mean that anyone under £10-12 million is a waste of money?..or someone from a league "below" the Prem. is no good? Everyone has to start somewhere.

Bertrand cost us £10 million - when 6 other clubs he 'd been loaned out to didn't bother.
Many people complained about the" waste of money " (£5 million) on Jan Bednarek and what about the £4 million we paid for Alex McCarthy? Was that money wasted?

No sorry you guys..the fee doesn't mean a thing when you consider that the majority of "record signings" we've made in the last 5 years have been inconsistant, and not really value for money ....they've cost the club a fortune in fees and salaries on 4 year contracts .Until we've seen this player (or any others) given the chance we really can't judge at all.

A lot is down to the contract that the player has ...in Armstrong's case he has one year left, and if we waited until January - he'd probably be even cheaper.
Even if he hasn't been 100% fit all the time , I don't think the £4 million we paid out for Charlie Austin can be considered "wasted money"..or do you?

Players bought for " modest" fees show good investment by the club, and if they don't make it ..we haven't wasted £15-20 million.

if you happy clappers think this is the sign of a positive way forward for the club then you are very much not up with the game,he will however join the rest of our average players in the championship he'll look as good as you lot imagine playing there, we may as well get jonathan forte and danny n guessen back as well, or may be get guly back to replace tadic what a joke I hope I'm wrong and you lot can clap away until your little hearts are content but I wasn't wrong about last season even before a ball was kicked,

Dear 1970,

I think all of us (ALL) so called "happy clappers" can see and agree wholeheartedly with You that things have changed negatively and steadily since Koeman left, and that Krueger & Reed (Laurel & Hardy) and Gao (the evil dwarf) are not doing a good job and are in fact pain in our *rses.
None of us are hinting that we think Stuart Armstrong will be as good an asset as his name brother without hair from the 80´s. We just wellcome a pretty proven player from a club from which we have picked up made more than 1 good player since we returned to the PL.

Let´s see some teeth for a change, Dude. Why so negative?

KriSaint I've been enthusiastic and pleased as well as very proud to be a saints fan in just the short years weve been back in the big time my concern though is we have had the tv money and have been blessed with some real quality players which we have sold for a great deal of money which is more than most teams in the prem have had and in short we finished 4th bottom
I don't care how much we spend on players or who leaves to a degree but I do expect that with all that quality we have had there is a clear difference in quality when we play the teams in the bottom half of the prem and especially those wet behind the ears teams that just got promoted,we were embarrassing against Newcastle and couldn't beat either of the other promoted teams
arguably our best result last season was an away win against high flying Fulham from the championship says it all, I hope we can go up-wards my friend I really do coyr
