Southampton FC Ladie's Team Kicks Off Home Season Today
Sunday, 16th Sep 2018 09:46

If you fancy watching a game of football this Sunday afternoon then why not pop down to Testwood Stadium in Totton and watch the Southampton FC Ladies team in action.

Sunday 16th September sees the arrival of England Women's football legend Marianne Spacey and her Southampton Football Club Ladies as part of the extensive relationship between The Stags and The Saints.

The Ladies take on Newbury LFC with a 2.00pm kick off. Gates Open at midday; £2 entry for adults, kids go free.

So why not pop along and watch the game and give support to the Saints Ladies who are not getting the coverage that they perhaps deserve as of yet.

At last Saints are taking the Ladies' game seriously...and not before time.
After all ..Women represent 51% of the population, and not a small amount of support to the Saints men's team ..take a good look around you the next time you're sitting in SMS and see for yourself.

The fact that Marianne Spacey was one of the most highly-merited players in the English Woman's game says something about SFC's desire to bring recognition to the game.

We readily praise the success of our women athletes at the Olympics and World Championships (where they often outnumber the men at that level).. yet still ignore that the English Women's team ranks highly in World Football.

The standard of the Women's football has advanced light years since the long ago days when they were derided and disregarded as serious athletes. In many countries around the World, the Ladies teams are superior to that of their male counterparts (!)

Let's hope that we get some real success for our Saints newcomers and see some real advances in the coming years. Good luck to the Ladies.

There does need to be a serious attempt at coverage locally on the womens' game and it's evolution. The Daily Echo and other local news media had an ideal opportunity to do this recently, and help fill a news vacuum with the recent World Cup. I doubt many know how the ladies football pyramid has evolved and how Saints have gone locally from being full of internationals to this tenuous Totton -Saints -Eastleigh connection. Anyone else used to pick up the now defunct Pink and wonder why we were all directed towards supporting or playing for Saints Ladies, when there have been many other equally talented and deserving women's football teams in the area?
