Saints Have To Sit Back With Fingers Crossed
Saturday, 16th Mar 2019 10:33

Although Saints aren't playing today there is Premier League action and some of the games could have an impact on our position in the League.

Saints fans have to sit back, cross their fingers, stroke their lucky rabbit's feet and hope that a couple of results go their way today.

The big one is up at Turf Moor where Burnley take on the erattic Leicester City, ideally the Foxes will win and that will mean we are still above Burnley and also have a game in hand, a draw would not be a total disaster, but a win for the Lancashire side would make things difficult even though it would be far from terminal.

Bournemouth take on Newcastle down the coast a little and will be looking to beat them , although doing Saints a favour will be far from their minds, it would mean that we would have a game in hand over the Geordies and only four points behind.

West Ham host Huddersfield and if the Hammers hammer them, that won't be the final nail in the Terriers coffin, but it won't be far off or them and they could be relegated when the full Premier League programme resumes in two weeks.

Likewise Fulham, Liverpool travel to them looking for a win that will take them back to the top of the table and put a little psychological pressure on City. For Fulham like Huddersfield this would just about spell any realistic end of their hopes of staying up.

Everton V Chelsea is just about the only fixture that doesn't have some sort of impact on Saints, defeat for the Toffee's would leave them only 7 points above us though and that will not go down well with the Everton faithful no their board, although they have a enough points to ensure a relegation fight is not likely, a poor end to the season could leave them closer to the bottom three than they would like.

Given the circumstances three years ago when they poached Ronald Koeman and started paying out silly money for transfers, it is perhaps a lesson for all clubs outside of the big six, money isn't everything, it is about being well run and fincding the right player at the right price rather than flashing the cash all the time.

Today won't be a disaster for Saints whatever way the results go, but fingers crossed it will make our task a little bit easier as we look to pull clear of the bottom three.

Not a good day to be a Burnley supporter. Losting at home to ten men in the midst of a relegation fight is depressing indeed. Obviously good for Saints, though. It's strange, but despite being just 2 points above the drop zone things are looking awfully rosy: Burnley and Cardiff have just four matches each against clubs outside the top six whereas we have seven. We've got a better goal difference as well. And most importantly, Burnley and Cardiff are crap sides, especially Cardiff, who are very lucky to be on 28 pts to begin with. It's hard to believe both of them will reach 36 pts, meaning two wins will do it for us. I trust Ralph and company to get it done.

Results went our way yesterday but I still expect us to drop plenty of points in the final 8/9 matches so it will still be uncomfortably close going into the final few matches. Ralph has done a miraculous job in his short time of the club and has seemed to have bought a bit of luck with him too. However a very good manager and a bit of luck alone are not sustainable without the correct playing staff to compliment them.
