Saints Squad Into Regeneration Phase
Thursday, 16th Apr 2020 07:55

As plans start to be put into place for the return of football either behind closed doors or otherwise, Ralph Hasenhuttl continues to make sure that his players will be fully prepared.

For the past four weeks the Saints squad have been training at home so to speak, following a strict regime issued to them by the club.

In line with Government restrictions about only going into work if absolutely necessary Saints have effectively closed Staplewood and St Mary's aside from essential maintenance and security.

But the squad have to be kept fit and ticking over so that they are ready for the return of football and all along they have been working to a timescale of end of May/start of June.

So although due to the obvious problems of not being able to get out on to the training field, they have still had a rigorous fitness regime and it has been strictly monitored to make sure that the squad has followed their individual programmes.

But now they are going into what is a "regeneration" phase, in essence this means a rest, although the squad will still have to do some training to keep them ticking over.

This will continue to April 27th and the squad will then return to a more rigorous schedule aimed at bringing them back into Staplewood sometime in May although there is no date for this yet.

Ideally they would like a minimum of 3-4 weeks of working at Staplewood before they return to competitive action.

In essence this is a revamped version of the usual pre season programme.

All of this though is dependent on when the current restrictions are relaxed and the Premier League programme can be resumed.

As mentioned the plan is that it can restart at the beginning of June, although this is increasingly likely to be behind closed doors and although this isn't ideal, it is the best option given the likely situation in early June.

Everyone is looking forward to an eventual re-start to finish the season properly - even if games are played behind closed doors. Prem. clubs reliant on TV sponsorship money and who have "mega stars" on huge salaries can't afford to take the hit of NOT playing out the season, and endangering their brittle economies by forfeiting big sponsor money.

However, the real question will be ...How will the next transfer window look?. The "big money clubs " may ride out the storm but many others (Saints included) will need to look carefully at their transfer budgets to see - how little they can get away with spending.

Some older fans will recall that the £4 million we paid for Rory Delap sounded a lot at the time (2001) and when we agreed a £7 million fee for JayRod - more than 10 years later - many fans began to question the value of that deal.(!)
One thing for certain - another deal for the likes of Carrillo (and even Danny Ings for a similar amount) may be a long way off and may stand as "record signing" for a long time.
