Colchester United picked up their 10th away win of the season at Edgar Street this afternoon thanks to a Mark Yeates free-kick and an own goal from Dean Beckwith.

Colchester United recorded the 10th, and probably easiest away victory of the season this afternoon to condemn Hereford United to League Two football season. A Mark Yeates free kick and an own goal from Dean Beckwith secured the points for United who will be wondering why they can't transform their excellent away form to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
U's manager Paul Lambert was again forced in to changes at Edgar Street. Dean Hammond was suspended after picking up his 10th booking of the season recently. Matt Lockwood fell ill in the U's hotel on Friday evening which meant that Alan Maybury came in to the side to partner the days skipper Kem Izzet.  Fellow fullback Marc Tierney also came back in to the side after being rested against Brighton on Monday whilst there was a recall for Akanni-Sunday Wasiu as he looks to secure a contract for next season. Anthony Wordsworth dropped to the bench alongside youth product Sam Corcoran who seems to have escaped Lambert's scathing critiscm of the youth structure at the club.
United might have taken an early lead as Mark Yeates picked up an early error from the Hereford defence to get in a shot which kissed the outside of the far post. However, there was a real feel of a game that had little riding on it though The Bulls were desperately fighting against relegation.
Izzet shot wide just after the quarter hour mark whilst Taylor did the same for the home side after a patient move. Pat Baldwin headed a U's corner wide and shortly afterwards, Ashley Vincent did well to head a bouncing ball between two defenders but keeper Gulacsi managed to get something on it.
Just after the half hour mark, Maybury was unlucky not to open his U's account with a dipping volley that just went a few inches wide of the goal. However, United took the lead two minutes later thanks to top scorer Mark Yeates. Just as he done at Elland Road early in the season, Yeates hit a stunning free kick from out wide and caught Gulasci out at his near post to register a round dozen for the campaign.
Six minutes later, United doubled their lead with a little help from Hereford. Yeates was afforded all the space he wanted on the Edgar Street pitch and when he crosse, beckwith stretched to get a touch before Marc Tierney but could only divert the ball in to his own net.
Hereford made a change at the break Rose coming on for Taylor but the first action of a non-descript second period saw Vincent fire Yeates' pass over the bar. It was all too easy for the U's with Hereford hardly able to muster a chance of note in what must be one of Gerken's easiest performances of his young career. Hackney might have done better but couldn't decide whether to pass or shoot so put the ball over the bar instead with people waiting in the box.
Steve Guinan then perhaps picked up the most ridiculous booking of the season so far. The Bulls striker was spoken to at length by the referee about his conduct but then spoke out of turn just seconds later to force the referee's hand. Dean Gerken watched a Myrie-Williams shot got past his post with a degree of comfort while Wasiu thumped a snap-shot over the target after the ball failed to fall for either Izzet or Yeates.
With twenty minutes to go, Gulasci saved at his near post from Yeates but from then on, neither United really looked to make a difference to the scoreline. Wordsworth replaced Hackney and Matt Heath came on for John White with seven minutes to go which meant that Pat Baldwin switch to right back for the remainder of the game.
Shortly after a booking for Coyne for handball there was a debut appearance from young midfielder Sam Corcoran who replaced Alan Maybury for the remaining few minutes in this very comfortable win for Lambert's U's. He must be as frustated as the rest of us at why this set of players cannot produce the goods at home.
