Arshavin’s brilliance vindicates Wenger’s angry eyes.

Results elsewhere gave both teams an opportunity to make up ground but the pressure appeared to suffocate us in the first half. A dismal performance was finally punished by Liverpool just before the break when Manuel Almunia decided to punch a chest high ball barely out of his area. It eventually fell to Dirk Kuyt who steered a shot past a posse of players into the back of the net and the goal was the least we deserved given that Gerrard should have had a penalty.

It was as poor as we’ve seen this season but we were miraculously transformed in the second half and it is no coincidence that the manager finally lost his cool with his precious youngsters in the break. According to Cesc Fabregas he ‘screamed’ that the players were ‘not fit to wear the shirt’. It is the kind of reaction that the players would hear nearly every week if the average fan were allowed into the changing room but Wenger’s reserved nature ensured that his outburst had maximum affect.

Our two goals still had an element of Glenn Johnson fortune about them but the general play and desire of the team, perfectly demonstrated by Alexandre Song, was a dramatic transformation from the first half. Song has provided a vital shield to our defence but he also provides powerful bursts forward that give us opportunities to outnumber opponents who aren’t expecting to see him so far forward.

Song’s work rate was surprisingly matched by Andrey Arshavin who has taken to the task of centre of forward with great appetite. Almunia’s desire to launch 80 yard balls could have dispirited Arshavin but he kept tussling with the Liverpool defence and got his reward when he took advantage of Johnson’s slip to slam the ball past a statuesque Reina. It was a stunning finish and has raised hopes of a title challenge in north London after Chelsea appeared to have extinguished them only two weeks ago.
