New skipper David Norris says he is proud to have been given the Blues’ armband in the wake of the bust-up between manager Roy Keane and former captain Jon Walters. Norris has already scored three goals this season, including a backheel in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

The 29-year-old says he is looking lead the side by scoring even more goals: “I’m very proud and honoured. I know it’s a cliché but this is a big club and it means a great deal.

“I once scored eight in a season and hopefully I can beat that this time around. The formation we are playing now allows me more freedom to get into the opposing box and in that case I should be scoring more often. I can’t remember backheeling the ball in a game before, let alone to put it into the net.”

Norris, who is pleased with four points from the first two league matches, says he won’t comment on the situation regarding his friend Jon Walters: “I don’t want to comment on the relationship between the manager and Jon.

“He has very high standards and wants us all to be focused all the while. He asks for 100 per cent from us, and if you do this he is happy. I feel I can speak to him and that he is approachable and will take on board any points that I might raise.”

Norris has been named Man of the Match by TWTD readers in all three of this season’s games.
