All are associated with Durham's fascination with the twisted spire of St Mary and All Saints Church in Chesterfield. One season, when visiting me for the match he insisted we actually visited the church prior to the game as it was within walking distance to Spireites old ground of Saltergate, a very close replica of Layer Road; old, decrepit, puddles in the gents loo, etc... but always had a great atmosphere.

After the shambolic performance at Barrow in front of a credible 150+ of the long-suffering U’s faithful, who deserved so much more for their efforts getting to and from our longest away trip of the season, Cambridge on Tuesday night was a much needed shot in the arm. Leaving aside the Cambridge United ticketing fiasco, we were everything we weren’t at Barrow and then some, and roared on magnificently by our sell-out allocation of just over 1,000 from the pre-match warm-ups through to the post-match celebrations.

After two undeserved defeats by Grimsby and Crewe, when despite having 46 shots over the games. we were unable to score that vital goal. At the time we had a whole team out injured, and suddenly making the play-offs looked difficult. Fast forward a week, with players returning from injury, and a workman like victory over Shrewsbury, everything was back on track. Now only 4 points from the play-offs, with a game in hand, and Walsall in seventh having another post Christmas wobble. Confidence is restored, as we embark on to the longest away journey of the season, the 326 mile trip to Barrow. A team currently bottom of the League Two form table.

Nice and prompt this week, now we have emerged from a somewhat stressful January transfer window relatively unscathed, with Lisbie, Tovide and Mbick (amongst others) all staying. We also had the unexpected addition of three loans as well: midfielder Fin Barbrook from Ipsh’t, defender Fin Back from Wycscum, and midfielder Romeo Akachukwu from Southampton. The Fins already have an appearance under their belt, at Crewe last Saturday, and I thought they both looked very good additions. Credit to Fin Back too, he met his new team mates for the first time on the coach up to Crewe.

So there I was, quietly sitting with slippers on gazing out of the window and listening to the tones of the countdown clock. When out of nowhere I get a message come through. The sender was Daniel of The U'sual fame. It had been so long that I thought I was seeing things. The message read along the lines of "Squire, I need help with my site, fancy writing a few things for me". At first I was more dumb-struck than wondering how Cian Bolger ever made it as a pro footballer. But then I thought to myself, "Why not Squire old boy, it's about time you shrugged off the tartan blanket and came out of retirement". So here it is, my musings on the 2013/14 season and my attempt to come back into the game, like Doogie away at Walsall and possibly equally as brief.
