The Squad (So Far)
at 04:43 9 Aug 2022

Dale out on loan leaving 27.

To complete the squad we still need a number 9, a midfield general type (preferably left footed), right back cover and perhaps a wide striker.

That means we need at least 5 more outgoings or possibly 6 - we're being slow in getting players out of the door.

GK: Grimshaw, Maxwell, S Moore

Full backs: Gabriel, Garbutt, Husband, Thompson

Centre Halves: Ekpiteta, Keogh, Williams, Thorniley, Tharme

Defensive Midfielders: Connolly, Dougall, Stewart, Virtue

Advanced Midfielders: Anderson, Bowler, Carey (U21), Fiorini, Hamilton, Lubala, Corbeanu, Patino

Strikers: Beesley, Lavery, Madine, Yates

I was surprised by the Thompson signing - I don't think he was brought here as back up.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Husband's back.

Apart from Patino, tonight'll be a run out for the second string who rarely seize their chance to impress.

I'm expecting us to scrape through with a drab win.

We've already tested the water with Dele-Bashiru and so musr be confident of landing him in subsequent negotiations.

Still awaiting more outgoings.

We're too easy to play against.

We got away with it against Reading and it covered over our shortcomings.

A last thought is that we're rubbish without the ball.

We've got to be more agressive, upset the other team's rythmn, get in their faces to win the right to play.

Then we can turn it on a bit.

Appleton's philosophy is to be offensive and control games but we can't do that. We spend the vast majority of matches pinned back in our own half.

Weve been pinned in our own half for most of the match against Reading and for 90 mins against Stoke when we're supposed to be agressive and attacking according to the manager.

The window's not closed but with our current squad we've got to play 2 up front and set the midfield up to be more combative.

Yates and Madine upfront until we get someone else.

It's difficult to know what to do in midfield with the players available. This highlights the injury problems and recruitment strategy, we're crying out for a robust left sided midfielder. It's far from ideal but the least we can do at the moment is to squeeze both Virtue and Dougall into the same starting line up.

Grimshaw
Connolly, Ekpiteta, Williams, Thompson
Bowler, Virtue, Fiorini, Carey, Yates
Madine

Subs:
Madine off injured after 21 mins to be replaced by Corbeanu - Yates then played number 9.
Dougall for Virtue at half time.
Patino for Fiorini after 70 mins
Lavery for Yates after 82 mins.

Surprises:
Persisting with Madine (and then Yates) alone up front.
Fiorini deep lying.
Inexpeienced and lightweight midfield 3 of Fiorini, Virtue and Carey - 2 of whom are coming back from long lay offs and the other a newbie.

Debut:
Patino coming on as a sub.

MoM:
There wasn't one. I'll go for Bowler.

The transfer window's not closed yet and we need some changes.

We had a terrible start in the L1 promotion season under Critchely but I wasn't worried. From the way we were playing and the general feeling around the club I knew we'd progress and things'd come right somehow.

The homeymoon perod or feelgood factor of being a progressive club on the up walked out of the door somewhere between Critchley leaving and Appleton being appointed.

Rosenior or even Brannagan would've resurrected this posituve feeling and kickstarted some momentum. I'm not getting that the players are in harmoney and buying into a new regime.

On the pitch there've been 1 or 2 decent fifteen minute periods in games but as it stands there's been precious little on show to suggest we're going to make a fist of it this season.

Spot on.

Especially the point about constant references to 'little'.

We were never good enough to have even a sniff of a chance.

It's early days and I don't usually panic under such circumstances but this pre season and the first 2 matches have got the warning bells ringing.

Our strikers can't play the lone role.

Midfield rolls over - it did under Critchley but that was deliberate so he could pack the defence.

Very little physical presence.

Something's got to change.

I'm not sure we're good enough / got the right players to play Appleton's system.

The players aren't used to the new system played by Appleton.

Under Critchley we had more of an all action style, some pressing and relied on a strong defensive set up.

We're now more passive without the ball.

We're supposed to be entering a reserve team this year.

I can't find a fixtue list but PNE (the current champions) have published theirs.

We're playing them away on Tuesday 27th September at 2p.m. and at home on Tuesday 24th January at 1p.m.

It looks like the season is starting on 23rd August.

Interesting team selection Red.

Rather than having an enforcer type player, you could be right that Appleton prefers his deep lying midfielder to be a ball player with a large passing range.

Prediction:

We got away with an unconvincing win at home against relegation favourites Reading. Stoke aren't in great shape but this match is a bigger test and will tell us more about where we are and what we have to do this season.

Team:
Grimshaw
Connolly, Ekpiteta, Williams, Thompson
Bowler, Fiorini, Dougall, Carey, Yates
Madine

Score: Stoke 3 - 1 Blackpool

Away attendance: 1,827
