Energy Price Cap 09:05 - Aug 23 with 3734 views | raynor94 | Rises by £149 a year for average use, so a rise of £349 for pensioners who are just over the threshold to receive pension credit. I hope Labour are proud of themselves

Labour are getting grief for all quarters, yet they haven't been in power for 2 months yet mun, I'm no fan of any Government particularly the last lot, this lot aren't gonna be any better no chance, but in fairness they've only just come into power and have to deal with the absolute mess Felixstowe's mates have left behind.

Energy Price Cap on 09:36 - Aug 23 with 2036 views | felixstowe_jack | No mention of the 8 million families on means tested benefits who received extra benefits last winter to cover the high cost of gas and electricity. The average family is 2.6 persons which means 21 million people will be affect by this. Together with 10 million pensioners that means 31 million vunersble people will have to pay extra for their energy cost this autumn and Winter with no help from labour .

Labour scrapped the fuel allowance, I agree all pensioners shouldn't get it, but the bar could have been set higher than just pensioners on benefits. And to rub salt in the wounds the pay rises to all and sundry is hard to swallow

I am unsure why people who pay more in during their working lives should be exempt, to be honest. If they wish not to receive it they can opt out & the money should go to a charity. It's like those who will be shortly screwed for looking forward to their retirement by paying into a private pension during their working lives. Maybe if Labour didn't hand out massive pay rises to keep the union bosses happy they wouldn't have to screw people over.

I'm one losing out on it, luckily for me it's not the end of the world, but I'm bitterly disappointed in Labour, announcing this measure whilst handing out inflation busting rises to the unions. Hard work doesn't always pay off

Energy Price Cap on 12:06 - Aug 23 with 1918 views | majorraglan | As has been said the CAP is set by Ofgem and even though it’s gone up, it’s much lower now than it was at the peak of the energy crisis. My view is that the fuel allowance shouldn’t be a universal benefit, it should be means tested because it can’t be right that the likes of my mate who’s a retired senior police officer and his Mrs who are pulling in around £100k per year in pension between them, people living in the sun or a relative of mine who rents 7 houses out get it no questions asked. My relative is whinging like … that he’s lost it even though he doesn’t need it! Just giving it to people on pension credit is in my opinion setting the bar too low, my mum is in her 80’s and lives just above the pension credit cut off and won’t get it even though she needs it. There has to be a better way of targeting the benefit, maybe scrapping it all together and giving pensioners a high tax free allowance, maybe increasing the basic pension but continuing the freeze of the personal allowance or paying it out via another way. I don’t know what the solution is, but there are some pretty clever people at the Treasury who could come up with a solution. It’s been a bit of a PR disaster for Labour, especially when they actually introduced it in 1997. [Post edited 23 Aug 13:51]

They’ve backed themselves into a corner a bit with the promises not to raise tax on about 80% of things leaving very little wiggle room. I’m not keen on the threshold for the winter fuel allowance and I find the insistence on keeping the child benefit cap cruel.

Most of the pay rises the government have settled are as a result of honouring the recommendations made by the pay review panels for the various sectors. The current government are merely honouring the recommendations they’ve received. If you want to blame anyone, blame the previous government who either failed to set the customary baselines in relation to affordability when the initiated this years round of pay reviews. Governments always set parameters, but Sunak’s crowd failed to do that and the question I’d posed is why? It’s far from handing out inflation busting pay rises to the unions.

Where do I stand because my occupational pension started paying out in 2011 when I was medically retired? Do I escape any tax because I pay income tax? I got lucky, my fixe tariff ends in October and I already signed up to a new fixed rate that is lower than I am paying right now. This energy stuff has been a total mess for ages. You'd think there'd be a long term plan to try and keep prices stable. I can't think of nything but I'm not a degree educated civil servant or politician, or an expert in the energy market. Still it seems to me there's profiterring going on. It's the same with petrol/diesel...food...banking....council tax...they always find excuses to excuse putting prices up. Then when thst reason is no longer valid the prices never drop back to where they were.

It’s always a kick in the balls when companies say they are forced to raise prices because they are struggling with costs etc then six months later announce record profits of severa hundreds of squillions of pounds. Now I’m not saying companies shouldn’t be making profits far from it but when you’ve got pensioners dying from the cold because they’ve got to make the very real choice of whether to heat their homes or eat food then it’s not an ideal situation.
