Yeah, it seems like they just have to turn up because we rarely do.

Oh there is definitely right or wrong but we often disagree about who is what! For my money, if him over using a phrase annoys you then fair enough, you're entitled to say so. I just don't think it's worth a thread of its own.

A lot of footballers come across as a tad thick or slow on tv because some of them are and most of them don't speak on tv so very often so they are nervous.

I had a brief discussion with Grimes a few years back and he didn't use the phrase once, to my recall anyway. Maybe he uses it to give himself thinking time, something a lot of us do, it doesn't sound as bad as Ummmmmmmm after every question.

Why is it so hard getting immigration numbers down?
at 19:46 19 Jan 2025

300 million wouldn't get anywhere near what is needed to do what you suggest. I do agree though, fast processing would be a much better way to help start the process.

Our politicians are hamstrung by their own uneptitude and fear though, they don't listen to the majority, they listen to their "special advisors" (people like Cummings) and the chattering classes who don't have to live with the problems caused by uncontrolled immigration.

The Overton window has shrunk, there are many things we are not allowed to debate, not just in politics. On this website, on whatsapp groups, the people in charge won't allow true freedom of speech anymore because there's always someone looking to be upset and insulted. The government is worse of all. The government is worse of all, dare to suggest that uncontrolled immigration is a genuine problem and you are usually decried as a racist. Those people always quick to assume that when you talk about immigration it is always about black people. They cannot see the bigger picture, or they refuse to.

The last time I saw an estimate it was that there's upwards of one million illegals in this country, it's a tad more than 300 quid each to sort them out, it'd probably cost more than that just to track some of them down.

Is Andrew Coleman on the brink with Williams and the new investors ?
at 17:15 19 Jan 2025

Well I think, logically, the manager is the cause of most of our problems and the players have just stopped playing for him. We have shown we can be a decent team. Therefore it's ditching the manager that makes most sense to myself. Then hopefully the new manager can get a tune out of the squad that's enough to find mid table obscurity and start the rebuild in the summer.

Surprise tip to replace Rachel Reeves
at 17:07 19 Jan 2025

Torsten Bell.....end by the sound of it.

Be careful what you wish for because if Reeves goes and we get this...

Of course he's a politician and much of what he has to oay will be put on expenses so we'll pay it for him, he can hike fuel duty and then claim most of his journeys are work related.

A casual observation now, we all knwo that when fuek prices rise then everything else gets more expensive too. If Bell becomes chancellor and fuel duty goes up every year it won't be long before many of us are struggling. even worse, the increase on costs to business will possibly see cuts being made as well as prices rising.

Commitment to Human Rights Act may mean IRA terrorists are paid damages
at 16:58 19 Jan 2025

And you say I don't understand....

First up AGAIN, every country in the world is "made up" they are all surrounded by artifically constructed borders.

Much of the land settled was uninhabited, it was in my post.

You say NOBODY in Ireland wanted this, can you back that up in any way or is it just your opinion?

It's really funny to hear you spout this line about Ireland when you spout a different line about Wales, you call it civic nationalism. It marks you down as a total hypocrite, or a liar. The residents of the areas that becaime Northern Ireland voted a certain way and got wht they wanted, it seems you still don't like democracy when it provides an answer you don't want. There are other countries in the world today that are also less than 100 years old and their people wanted it to happen. Should they be disbanded and forced back into whichever country they left merely because they are "new"?

South Sudan, Kosovo, East Timor, Palau, Eritrea, Czech republic, Slovakia, Yemen, Latvia, Lithuania, Brunei, St Kitts and Nevis, The Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, all of those are a lot less than 100 years old so does that mean they shouldn't exist? And they exist because the people, the residents of those areas wanted it that way just as in Northern Ireland.

That built in adbvantage hasn't disappeared, the people of Northern Ireland are descendants of the plantation and they consider themselves to be Irish. They are entitled to their beliefs and opinions. The only real difference between them and the Southern Irish now is religion and passports. Otherwise they are all human beings who deserve respect and to be allowed to make their own decisions.

If, one day, the decide they want to keave the UK and join the ROI then it's their choice and I think they are more likely to be offended by you demanding you know who they are and what they want. That is for them to say, not you.

You don't have a great track record at this predictions lark, Scotland, indy up there is further away than ever which, by your logic makes Welsh indy furhter away too.

You see, you cannot demand that people can make their own choices and then demand they will do what you say they will do. You don't speak for the millions of people, you can barely even speak for yourself with contradicting yourself or being a hypocrite.

There's nothing new here, same old Kilky.

Why is research cheating?

Why is the pusruit of knowledge cheating?

How do we learn then if it is cheating?

You can take steps to make working more attractive though. Tell people who live on benefits their pension will reflect their lesser contributions and they won't be entitled to any other benefits to top up their income.

I know it might not be a popukar idea but isn't it time to play hardball with persistent scroungers?

Again, and I hope obviously, not all on benefits are scroungers so we need a very good system to weedle out those who are and so make sure those who are on benefits for good reasons can still get help.

It's a difficult call and I wouldn't like to be the one making it but hand in hand with htis we need to crack dpwn on tax avoiders and evaders too.

We shouldn't just target one end of cheating.

Who would you give the captain armband to now, if you could choose?

fair enough but to my mind keeping him as captain is the biggest drawback.

Maybe they have learned from that?

It's possible that making someone else Captain could turn out better for Grimes and the team. Grimes isn't a god captain and maybe he could do without that responsibility and just concentrate on playing?

Todays team selection, Cullen up front' it doesn't work but Cullen at CAM has been working, that was a mistake.
Allen starting, hindsight maybe but a mistake.

Not that Eon or Ronald got many crosses in but Cullen won't win those headers.

Allen really needs to retire, I think he's gone, done. If he retires we can juse his wages on new players.

To precis, Williams get sacked, Cullen at CAM and Allen retires, it's what we need

PS, Eom and Ronald need crossing practice.

Of course it can be changed mid season and I think we should. I think Grimes would be better without the captaincy to start with. That's along with my not thinking he's a good captain.

I'd offer it to Darling as part of the carrot to get him to sign a new deal.

If not Harry, the Vogoroux or Cabango, I really don't think there's any other candidates and Allen should just retire for everybody's good. He was well off the pace today, luclky to not get booked for persistent fouling and he did little worthwhile, for me anyway.

The only real forfeit is leaving people with absolutely nothing but that won't happen.

The only real option for me is to force people to save, even tjhose on benfits by taking 10% of their money and putting it into a pension pot. That is the change there needs to be, the state pension needs to have it's own pension fund. Regulated by the government and opoen to everyone from birth. Then if your parents are minded to, they can start putting money in your pension pot and by the time you are 18 you could already have a decent start.

There coukld be an advantage in that, the retirement age could come down? Imagine a pension fund that is state run and tax free. A fund that, when you are 18 and have the control, you can put as much as you want into with it having an online account so you can keep track of your donations. You get an annual statement and it's your responsibility to keep the information safe (in case of any problems) and then at the stated age, you retire with a proper pension. Maybe they'd need to have a "National bank" that ran this new pension fund, one that uses the money to provide realtively cheap mortgages ( a fixed interest rate of 4%) with all profits going into the pension fund. Obviously minus the running costs and taxes.

Does any of that make sense?

The term "British protestants....you do understand that as Irrland was ruled by Britain the residents of Ireland would have been considered British. Back then it wouldn't have been Irish British or Welsh British either, just British because the Monarchy and government wouldn't have it any other way..

Do you also understand that these "British protestants" included a large number of Scottish settlers who had been arriving for 100 years by then. In 1607, Sir Randall MacDonnell settled 300 Presbyterian Scots families on his land in Antrim. From 1609 onwards, British Protestant immigrants arrived in Ulster through direct importation by Undertakers to their estates and also by a spread to unpopulated areas, through ports such as Derry and Carrickfergus.

By 1622, a survey found that there were 6,402 British adult males on Plantation lands, of whom 3,100 were English and 3,700 Scottish – indicating a total adult planter population of around 12,000. However, another 4,000 Scottish adult males had settled in unplanted Antrim and Down, giving a total settler population of about 19,000

Despite the fact that the Plantation had decreed that the Irish population be displaced, this did not generally happen in practice. Firstly, some 300 native landowners who had taken the English side in the Nine Years' War were rewarded with land grants. Secondly, the majority of the Gaelic Irish remained in their native areas, but were now only allowed worse land than before the plantation. They usually lived close to and even in the same townlands as the settlers and the land they had farmed previously.. The main reason for this was that Undertakers could not import enough English or Scottish tenants to fill their agricultural workforce and had to fall back on Irish tenants

My thanks to Wiki for the copy and paste, for the full information that others do not always provide.
As you can see, Kilky, The "British protestants" were mostly Scottish and native Irish.

Cardiff City v Swansea City : Match day thread
at 16:02 18 Jan 2025

I stayed out of this today, I thought this whole scenario was hiughly likely given our recent performances and how LW has behaved.

Seems to me we just need rid of him, tonight. We cannot move on or hope to improve while he remains.

The next manager/coach will choose his own captain which may or may not be Grimes, hooefully not.

The very fact that I am not hurt or upset at today shows the damage that has been done.

Who is responsible for the Brexit fiasco?

Anybody with kids, if they care about them, should be trying to find the best way forward.

Even if we had the vote and chose to rejoin how many years would it take?

We have to do the best we can because we have very little say over the big things so carrying on the best way we can is the onlky sensible thing.
