Savage Rejects Vancouver To See Out Season With Derby!
Savage Rejects Vancouver To See Out Season With Derby!
Monday, 24th Jan 2011 05:27 by Daniel J Sewart

After being dragged off during Saturday's clash with Forest, Derby Captain Robbie Savage announced he is staying put and that a move to Vancouver is not for him and his family.

I think many of us watching Robbie Savage deflated and angry at being substituted after a poor showing would have readily bet a few pounds on Savage walking away towards the promised land of the MLS.

Instead Robbie announced on his Twitter page late yesterday that he would not be moving to the shiny new franchise of the Vancouver White Caps:

"I'm going to stay here. Canada was a great option but it was too big a move for my family."

“The Vancouver presentation was awesome, looks like they’re going for it big time,” he wrote. “Lovely people, a great chance for someone. Good luck Vancouver.”

"It was a massive call but I've worked hard in the media to get where I am and took good advice off people it's the right choice. So for the first time ever I will be out of contract in the summer."

This decision means he will now see out his time with the Rams until the end of this season. Speaking to Radio Derby before the game on Saturday he admitted that once his contract is up he will be leaving the Rams after not being offered a new deal or a role in the coaching team. The latter he sounded quite upset about.

He also did not rule out continuing in the Championship should a club attempt to secure his services. He clearly still has the desire to play but just as clearly stressed that if his only option was to drop down to a lower level of football, then it might be time to hang up his boots.

These comments came before he had a dirty day against a fleet of foot Forest side. He was far from his best but received little cover from a formation which is supposed to give their Captain time on the ball to distribute.

Sav was left exposed too often and was in danger of being sent off after some terribly timed challenges on players he perhaps should not have had to be chasing, had others been doing their jobs.

Nigel Clough withdrew him from proceedings and later conceded it was because of advice he and his team received:

“He had been booked, he had made another foul and the information we were getting from the fourth official was one more thing and he would be sent off. We couldn't afford that to happen with 35 minutes to go."

Savage reacted angrily throwing his boots down and clearly making it clear he was unhappy to have been sacrificed but later admitted he had behaved badly and in the heat of the moment. On his BBC Radio 606 talkback program and via twitter he stated:

"My frustration got the better of me should set an example as captain but it's in the heat of the moment! Problem is I still care!!"

One thing about Robbie Savage, no matter what you think of the boy, it is pretty difficult to argue with that statement.

He will hope his career, should it end at Derby, finds a happier ending than the one that the team and its fans experienced on Saturday.
