Steve Davis Signs For Saints ! Interesting !
Steve Davis Signs For Saints ! Interesting !

When Saints cancelled the friendly with Rangers in the memorial cup I suspected it might be because we were about to sign one of their contract rebels and i was right.

In fairness it didnt take a genius to work out that Saints could be chasing Steve Davis, after all it was rumoured in just about every newspaperand now Saints have got their man with eh ex Aston Villa, Fulham and now Rangers midfielder joining Saints to join former rivals in the Auld Firm game Danny Fox and Jos Hooiveld.

Of course its another piece in the jigsaw, and hopefully Saints will now focus on other more important areas, but Davis joins an already crowded midfield department, in total he makes the eighth option in that area, ninth if Alexander Buttner arrives and thats not including the underage players who are hoping to make a breakthrough like Jamie Ward Prowse etc, its clear that in midfield especially and in certain other areas of the field Saints will need to have a clear out, there are currently 24 over 23 years old players in the first team squad including Davis and we still need another keeper and central defender at least.

Still moaning, blah blah blah. A quality signing nicky.

I havent had a moan at all, I merely mentioned that we are a bit overweight in midfield and that the squad will soon be over its 25 man limit, it will be interesting to see who is jettisoned, Puncheon is the obvious first choice but after that we will start to get into a few of those that played games regularly not so long ago, Harding & Butterfield could be another two on the redundancy list

Central midfield 2 from Davis Morgan Cork - I don't think Hammond Chaplow will get a look in and the youngsters will have to bide their time and learn their trade.
Adam in the hole or wide right , probably wide right especially if we dont sign anyone.
I think davis will get us a goal or two which will make a nice change from midfield.

Maybe Adkins is 'doing a Spain' with an 8 man midfield!

That did sound like a moan Nic. would you rather NA sold first and then bought? We clearly will be clearing the decks some bit.
Why would Nigel sign another midfielder? Because we needed one who could do what is needed. Command. Deal done at right time and right price.
Of our remaining midfield squad there will be movers ..or if not non players.
Moving off in the near future? Guly, Hammond, Puncheon, Chaplow or De Ridder?
Chappers and Guly the more likely to stay longer. Face it Guly haters.

Dan Harding is the first to go by my reckoning and the fact that he's just put his house up for sale... Now clearly he could just be using his promo bonus to upgrade....

Nick, I don't want to pre-empt any future articles, but the arrival of Steve Davis begs the question of who will be appointed captain. The general concensus of opinion is that Hammond wont be involved so much, and goalkeeper is less than an ideal position to get a grip on things. Fonte was the stand-in last season, but is he going to end up as first choice centre back this year. Will Steve Davis be the one, or will Adkins prefer someone who already knows the players?

so does anyone actually know what interesting steve davis is like as a player? If he captained Rangers (although not sure if that was this season or many moons ago), i would guess he has a rather good comanding presense, something we have sometimes lacked (Hammond isnt really a captain). Is he an old roy keane type player, or something else??

I think Davis will skipper the side from centre midfield alongside Morgan at the beginning of the season, because Jack Cork will not be available straight away.

For goodness sake, a small minority of correspondents seem incapable of viewing Saint Nick's commentaries and interpretation of events as anything but whingeing, moaning and negative! Utter nonsense, the great majority of his comments are balanced and constructive, I may not agree with them all, but I appreciate his views and think they hit the target of being thoughtful and well reasoned. Being critical is not the same as being negative, if you want uncritical commentaries then simply read the Club's official website which has become a purveyor of "spin".
I also think that the ability to produce interesting articles throughout the "summer silence" is an impressive achievement which we should all be appreciative of.
Does anyone have more in depth knowledge of Davis as a player, particularly what his midfield role has been for Rangers, it seems difficult to think about where he would be picked to play, especially if Lallana moved into the centre?

I was just reading an article on Rangers players - now i dont know if this is 100% true or not, but Steve Davis was the top earner there on 28k a week. Now I imagine, Saints would have had to offer at least in the region of 35k a week to get him to come to us. No transfer fee, but it shows where out wages are at these days if it is indeed true. Interesting times...

I think Davis will start in central midfield and captain the team. He was the Rangers captain last season and also captain's his country. I hear he is a box to box all action type midfielder. Seems a very good signing and in my view we needed some experience in the centre.

I dont see Lallana playing in the centre - this would effectively mean that we would play one up front and I dont think this will happen - certainly not at home..

Playing Lallana in the 'hole' using a diamond formation. 2 upfront.
Wing backs instead of wingers..Buttner for one.
