Letter to the Observer
Letter to the Observer

Following the Ob's lack of recognition of recent Dale activities, one supporter has been prompted to contact them directly to voice his frustration.

The following letter has been sent to the editor of the Rochdale Observer. If you would like to contact the Ob, they can be emailed at Obsport@menmedia.co.uk

Dear Gerry,

I write to you, not for publication, but as a Rochdalian and Observer reader to ask if you are aware of the unbelievable things going on at Spotland, home of Rochdale AFC?

I realize that your paper has a duty to represent the whole town in fair proportion, which is why I am genuinely puzzled that your paper sees fit to turn its back on the biggest success story this town has witnessed in my lifetime.

All too often the townsfolk read the Ob and are reminded of the redundancies, the stabbings, the arson attacks, the druggies and other problems that towns like Rochdale and Bury suffer. It can be a depressing read at the best of times through no fault of anybody but society as a whole!

Against the harsh backdrop of our town, there is a jewel shimmering with such fervour, that I thought at the very least you would have had a reporter at Valley Parade last night when this Rochdale team became the first to top the league in the month of December.

I don’t know if you were the Editor when we went to Wembley in 2008, but the club united the town and the Ob played its part with excellent coverage showing what could be achieved. 16,000 people parted with around £100 to share in that momentous occasion. I’m sure they’d happily part with 55p on a Saturday to read about the continued success of Keith Hill’s team.

Your publication has a part to play in team Rochdale and the success of the team would undoubtedly reap a spin off in paper sales were the team to maintain its form which would guarantee promotion.

This is the time for the Ob to embrace the club and use it to put back some of the pride us local folk feel when we hear that Woolies has shut, Alexander Drew has shut, Edna’s been robbed of her pension, some poor lass has been raped and so on.

I hope you can see my point and can agree that now is the time for club and Ob to come together in a meaningful way that will benefit both parties.

Yours sincerely
