The match-winner came as a result of an eighth minute corner taken by Richie Appleby. Jason Smith attacked the cross at the far post and when a defender blocked his header, Jenkins was on hand to fire the rebound into the net. Just moments earlier, keeper Michael Devine had produced a fine stop to deny Tommy Mutton, but this time he had no chance of making the save. Keeping his promise to involve his entire squad on the tour, manager Hollins fielded a completely different starting 11 from that which beat Cobh Ramblers on Monday. Largely consisting of the club's younger players, the side's enthusiasm and determination repeatedly won applause from both sets of supporters as it set about creating a number of good half-chances. It was one of those youngsters who almost grabbed the Swans a second goal. On 16 minutes summer signing Andrew Mumford went close with a header from an Appleby corner. Coming forward to support the set-piece, the 18-year-old central defender saw his effort go just over the crossbar. There were occasions when Waterford broke through too and Jason Jones had to make the save of the match on 24 minutes - parrying Robert Griffin's 18-yard drive away to safety. Early in the second period Jones' goal was again under threat. Joe Watson pushed the ball beyond Jason Smith and then ran on to face Jones. But with just the goalkeeper to beat he lifted his shot well over the Swansea crossbar and onto the running track that surrounds the Waterford pitch. By this time Swansea had begun to use their substitutes and Appleby was now partnering Mutton up front. It was an alliance that produced a number of opportunities to widen the winning margin. Mutton went close twice and Smith assisted by an Appleby cross headed just over during a strong finish by the visitors. After the game Swansea made the two-hour trip back to their Cork base from where they will prepare for tomorrow's fixture against local side Cork City. They are expected to provide the tour's toughest opposition.
