Cambridge Utd vs Swans - 25/11/2000 - K.O 3.00pm
Predicted Team

Freestone

S Jones - O'Leary - Cusack - Howard

Price - Romo - Jenkins - Roberts

Savarese - Boyd

News

The Swans in this crunch tie will be without the backbone of our defence that won us the Div. 3 title last season as both Jason Smith and Mat Bound are both out with suspensions. Captain Cusack is expected to drop back to fill one of the Central Defender roles whilst the other spot will most probably fall to O'Leary. Then again however Hollins usually changes to the most unexpected line-up, so don't expect the side predicted to be the same as the one strolling out @ Cambridge!

David Romo is also at last chance saloon as the French Under-21 International has done little since his impressive introduction to the football league against Stoke over a month ago. Especially since it was his simple error which knocked us out of the Cup last Saturday.

The other interesting mix should be the initial teaming up of Venezulan Int. Savarese and Reggae Boyz favourite Walter Boyd, which was promised for the FAW Premier Cup match against Connahs Quay midweek but the game was called of. Watkin should be moved to the subs bench.(update......Watkins injury will put him out for 4 weeks leaving the door open for Tommy Mutton (dressed as lamb ;-) ) to take the bench.

Cambridge Utd.... The Story so Far by Andrea Thrussell

We have signed several new players since the end of last season, when we struggled until March and had to produce promotion form to stay up, although top scorer Trevor Benjamin was sold to Leicester in a £1.5m deal in the summer.

The money has gone towards signing-on fees for free transfer signings Lionel Perez (goalkeeper) from Newcastle, John Dreyer (central defender) from Bradford, Tom Cowan (left back) from Burnley and Steve McAnespie (right back) from Fulham.

As you can see we have concentrated on the defence but Zema Abbey was a revelation up front after coming from non-league football in February and looked capable of filling Trevor Benjamin's boots until fame went to his head and he made demands for a new contract that would have made him the second highest paid player at the club after around 20 first team games! He is currently out of favour and unlikely to play again until he signs a new contract, as McFarland refuses to be held to ransom.

Other new faces are striker Jonas Axeldal, signed on a free from Ipswich where he was overall top scorer in the Combination last season, and former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Scott Oakes who is on week-to-week terms as he tries to prove a full recovery from a career-threatening knee injury.

It was a poor performance on Saturday in the FA Cup against Rochdale, although we scraped a fortunate 2-1 win, and even worse in the second half at Wrexham on Tuesday, but somehow we nicked a point in injury time.

Roy McFarland made four changes on Tuesday night as recent loan signings Johann Gudmundsson (Watford, winger) and Paul Connor (Stoke, striker) who were inelgible for FA Cup win against Rochdale on Saturday, were available again while experienced defenders John Dreyer and Tom Cowan returned from suspension. Connor scored both our goals in a 2-2 draw and Lionel Perez produced a string of fantastic saves, but there could be changes in almost any of the other nine positions! Midfielder Alex Russell has gone on the transfer list today after failing to agree new terms and saying that his aim is to play in Division One. Our danger man is Tom Youngs, 21-year-old top scorer and a pacy youngster who will probably start wide in midfield but can ghost into the box and score.

This is a vital one for both of us and we go looking for our first league win for well over a month. We're very low on confidence but I think we could just nick it - we surely can't play worse than in the last two games!

Player 2 Watch : Johann Gudmundsonn

The on-loan right winger so far has done very little for Cambridge but the Watford Player has proved a force in the past in higher divisions with Watford, scoring 2 goals in his debut against Port vale 2 seasons ago.
