Swansea v Wrexham - Match Preview

Home >Story Index> Swansea v Wrexham - Match Preview

Saturday is St David's Day, and you couldn't pick a better day for a Welsh Derby could you? Wrexham boss Denis Smith brings his team down from North Wales and will be hoping that they can keep their play-off charge on course at the Vetch.

It's been a hectic week for Brian Flynn, with the search for a replacement for Roger Freestone at the top of the list. After a week of wheeling and dealing, Flynn has signed Stoke City keeper Neil Cutler on loan and he will make his Swansea debut against Wrexham. There will be no reunion for Wrexham "old boys" Steve Watkin (virus) and Kieron Durkan (achilles), midfielder Lenny Johnrose will also miss the game after failing a fitness test. But there is positive news, Terry Evans is expected to pass a late fitness test and James Thomas returns to the team after breaking his scoring duck against Barry Town in midweek.

Denis Smith was expected to field the same team that drew with Darlington last weekend, with the defensive pairing of Dennis Lawrence and Stephen Roberts both passing late fitness tests. But jackarmy.net has just learnt that former Man City midfielder Jim Whitley dropped out of the squad this morning with a thigh injury.

With things as tight as ever at the bottom end of Division 3, we must take something from Saturday's game. However, our record against Wrexham is far from impressive. In fact, we haven't beaten the Robins in a League fixture since the start of the 1993/94 season, when goals from Mark Harris, Colin Pascoe and John Cornforth sealed a 3-1 win for the Swans. Wrexham's goal scorer that day was none other than Steve Watkin!!!

Let's hope that it's South Wales that has the most to celebrate on Saturday, with another three points to help our "Great Escape"
