White Rock News - 3rd December 2003

SWANSEA'S new £24 million sports stadium is on its way with work progressing on site.

The White Rock Stadium is set to become a new home for world class sport and entertainment.

International sports events and the world's leading bands and singing stars could all perform at the futuristic stadium.

The 20,000 all-seater stadium will also be able to house 30,000 fans for pop and music events.

The stadium will boast some of Britain's most modern faciltiies, including:

· 20,000 seats.

· 28 self-contained glass fronted hospitality boxes with external seating.

· 400-person capacity banqueting suite.

· 200-person conference venue.

· food and drinks units in concourse around stadium bowl.

Work is already under way on the stadium, with local contractors Interserve currently sinking more than 1,000 concrete piles on the site.

The piling work is expected to be completed in January, when the stadium's steel structure will be erected.

The fantastic stadium will be completed for the start of the 2005 season.

The designers, TTH Architects, is the company that designed and supervised construction of Sunderland FC's acclaimed Stadium of Light. And now TTH have come up with a revolutionary design for White Rock to ensure it has a first class playing surface.

To avoid the pitch problems that have dogged other stadia where grass struggles to grow, grass growth will be boosted by a translucent roof structure to maximise the sun and light penetrating the stadium. The four corners will also be open to allow extra light and air to circulate.

The pitch, which is designed to host up to 62 games each season, will be seeded and grown on site. Along with 20,000 seats, Swansea's new stadium will comprise hospitality and function suites, office accommodation and 200 wheelchair spaces.

TTH's Andrew Snell said, "The provision for disabled spectators exceeds current guidelines to meet the City and County of Swansea's ambitions to provide a fully inclusive design.

"Providing unsurpassed sight lines, comfort and atmosphere, the stadium is designed to be a hard working seven day a week operation, providing facilities for the people of Swansea."

The stadium has been welcomed by the city's rugby and football clubs who will both make the arena their new home.

Steve Penny, Non-Executive Director of Swansea City AFC, said, "The stadium will totally transform the face of sport in Swansea.

"As a football club it will open up a whole range of opportunities. On the field the players will have wonderful facilties, while spectators who have recently left us due to the state of The Vetch will return in their thousands.

"The other aspect for us is the commercial opportunities by offering hospitality facilities and developing merchandising.

"As a city we will be able to bid for and host national and international matches such as Wales football friendlies and cup finals. The potential is amazing."

Rosemary Morgan, solicitor to Swansea RFC, said, "This stadium will have a huge impact on rugby in the area. Suddenly, we will have extraordinary facilities both for players and supporters.

"It will rejuvenate interest in rugby in Swansea."

Lawrence Bailey, Swansea Council Leader, said, "Work is progressing well and we are delighted to see the site under construction.

"The new stadium will send a message far and wide that Swansea means business. We will provide a fantastic new stadium to welcome the world's leading sports stars and entertainers and give the city world class facilities for its teams and supporters."

And nearby Capital & Regional plc are developing the former Morfa Stadium site to create a modern retail and leisure complex with stores and shops, including B&Q and Morrisons, three restaurants and a health and fitness club on land near the new stadium.
