Swans Look To Bank Cash In FAW Premier Cup

It may be a insignificant trophy in the grand scheme of things but Swansea start their FAW Premier Cup trophy with a trip to Caernarfon Town tomorrow with the prize a place in the semi finals.

As we said at the bottom ot may be insignificant but with £100,000 up for grabs for the winners and a hopeful Swans promotion the money could prove to be invaluable if Kenny Jackett spends his summer preparing for life in League One.

Swansea have never won this competition having been beaten finalists twice - against both Wrexham and Cardiff - and there is every chance that should they reach the final then it could be the final match ever at the Vetch. However, after stumbles in recent years at Newport and Rhyl, Kenny Jackett will take nothing for granted in tomorrow's game.

The question that everyone debates every year is which side should we play in this competition? There are merits to keeping the current side and giving us the best chance of winning the competition but I always take the view that if the likes of Corbs and Pritch make up our squad then they should get a run out together with some first team players that need to return to match fitness - Stuart Jones being a classic example on this front?

Last year Jackett played pretty much a full strength team as the Swans were humiliated at Rhyl but that was his first game in charge and he needed to see the job in front of him. A big one no doubt was his conclusion. This time around he has to consider the ins and outs of Saturday's game and the Swans chance to leap frog Scunny into 2nd place. On this basis alone I believe we will see the fringe players and rightly so.

Caernarfon and their average attendance of just over 250 this season will include in their line up former, and much vilified Swan, Steve Watkin who joined them after being released in 2003 from the Vetch. No doubt Watkin will be looking to score against his former club and it would be unwise to think of him not doing so.

This won't be a walk in the park for the Swans but it is a game that we should expect to win no matter what happens. Wrexham are the only league side left in the competition after the exit of Cardiff City and logic should say a Swansea/Wrexham final but who knows.

And no doubt some would add, who cares.
