Morley's Musings: Massive Investment Must Translate Into Promotion
Thursday, 3rd Sep 2015 13:53 by Nathan Morley

So there we have it — in 2 days we had 2 massive new signings and a new outright owner of the club!

On the player side of things Jacob Butterfield joined the Rams on a 4-year-deal for £4 million or as high as £5 million, according to various reports.

The second big cash splash came in the form of Norwich’s Bradley Johnson in on a 4-year-deal for what would be a club record £6 million if reports are correct.

The only other news on the transfer front was Kelle Roos returning to Derby after his loan ended early after Rotherham signed Lee Camp.

The Butterfield transfer had been coming and the fee Huddersfield commanded will only add to the pressure on the new boy. The Terriers will be gutted to lose one of their top players but this is still the same player that Middlesbrough allowed to leave in 2014.

Johnson is quite a stunning signing. At this level he is a very capable player. Last season he scored 15 goals and won Norwich City’s player of the year in their promotion-winning season. He has what it takes in this division, that’s for sure.

Thorne, Hendrick, Hanson, Bryson, Johnson & Butterfield… just who do you play in midfield?

It’s probably safe to say that Paul Clement isn’t too keen on the idea of continuing with Hendrick with two signings in his position. The Irish midfielder has lacked consistency for some time now.

In a 4-3-3, a midfield of Thorne, Butterfield and Johnson could work well. In other news, Kelle Roos will be disappointed that things haven’t worked out with Rotherham after seeing the Millers concede 13 goals in the league already. Maybe another club can be found for him when the loan window opens.

And as we welcome Mel Morris as the outright owner of DCFC today — the huge investment he has obviously been involved in supporting - simply has to translate into promotion.

There’s no hiding now.

Over to you, Mr Clement and squad!
