Interview with a Millwall fan
Wednesday, 23rd Sep 2015 20:31 by Col

It's our first ever visit to the New Den this weekend, so we asked a Millwall supporter what we should expect.

1) Who are you, and how long have you supported Millwall?
Mark Litchfield, 25 years old and I've been going to The Den since the age of 5.

2) What makes supporting Millwall from supporting any other club in the country?
We're unique to say the least. It's hard to sell what it's like being a Millwall fan unless you actually are one - there's a siege mentality at all times and we don't take any prisoners. I'm sure there's quite a few opposition fans reading this who know the difference between Millwall and every other club!

3) For many of us, it'll be our first visit to Millwall. How does a trip to Millwall differ from the media image?
In all honesty, it's one of the safest trips in the country. You get off the train, walk down your own walkway and are then ushered straight into the ground. Once inside, you're so far away from the home fans (unless you bring a few thousand) that hand gestures are the only thing to be worrying about.

4) Given you've lost all your home games so far, do we just have to turn up and pick up the points? Or is it a case of one of these days, some team is going to get a hammering?
Our home games follow a pattern - we start well, can't score and then the opposition net a soft goal with their first chance. Patience is extremely thin (rightly so) at the moment - it doesn't take a lot for the fans to get on the players' backs. However, I personally saw more in the first half of the Southend game towards fixing that than I've seen in a few months beforehand - something just needs to go right. Hopefully it will on Saturday!

5) What's the average Millwall fan think of a team like Rochdale?
We seem to have a lot of fans at the moment that can't understand that we are now a League One side that are at the very beginning of a huge re-build - for them, anything less than promotion is a failure. So, I'd imagine that there's a few fans thinking 'it's only Rochdale'. However, the more sensible ones among us know that this isn't the League One we left a few years ago - there's a lot of good footballing sides in the division now.

6) Who should we look out for on Saturday?
We have a few players that have shone this season, but at this precise moment, no one is really standing out. On their day, if Shaun Williams, Fred Onyedinma and Steve Morison turn up, we might actually win a home game!

7) What's your thoughts on League One from what you've seen so far?
As I've said above, this isn't the League One that we left a few years ago. Bar a few sides, we left a very poor division, with the majority of teams having an 8ft striker that they lumped the ball up to, but now, there are more 'footballing sides' in the division. There are still some teams like the former, but I'm not surprised to see the latter from most now.

8) What's the worst thing about being in League One?
For us, the northern trips! I think it's Colchester, Southend, Gillingham and Swindon (kind of) that are 'local' - anything else is over 100 miles away!

9) Where's the best place for a drink before the game?
I know a lot of away fans venture into Borough Market - give that a go.

10) Any predictions for the game?
We showed small signs of a Den recovery in the first half of the Southend game last Saturday, so if we can carry that on and nick a goal, I'll go with a draw. 1-1.
