Saints Fans Need To Be Patient As More Left Back Signings Linked.
Wednesday, 6th Jul 2016 13:55

You can understand why Saints fans re getting impatient for Claude Puel to make a signing and you can understand why they are getting nervous as we seem to be only linked with left backs, but there is no need to panic !

When a new manager arrives it is natural for the club's supporters to want to see he has his finger on the button and a few new signings up his sleeve, however that is not the Saints way of doing things anymore, although of course any manager coming will have the odd player or two he wants to work with, it is the club's own scouting system that will be identifying the bulk of any incoming signings with the manager merely rubber stamping most deals.

But that will not stop the press speculating and most media outlets will take the easy route to a headline and that means linking French players, those who have played in France and those who have played under Puel at previous clubs.

These rumours will take no account of whether Saints actually are in the market for players linked, hence we are being linked with an extraordinary number of left backs at the moment, despite having two of Premier League standard in Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett.

So those who are salivating with indignation at the lack of transfer activity before the manager has been in place for a week, should be patient, let the new manager and the Saints scouting system do there jobs and then the new signings will start to come in.

Indeed Saints prefer to do things quietly and under the radar so as to hopefully not get themselves involved in situations where agents and clubs try to push the price up by using the media to stoke up interest in players.

That is why Saints get linked with so many players these days, we are seen as a progressive club who are always striving to improve the squad and that is why our name linked with a player will increase his profile, we are seen as doing a thorough job on evaluating a player, so if we are interested then that player must have something about him.

Couldn't agree more. Love that Saints are so discreet in their dealings.

I don't believe Saints will try and compete with the teams around us this transfer window. The likes of Stoke, Everton, Palace to name a few. I have a feeling the new manager has been brought in to shift the focus back on our academy, which means using a smaller squad and spending less. It will be interesting to see how we can achieve a top half finish If this theory is correct.

"Salivating in indignation" indeed. So I will stop panicking about the sale of Bertrand as this left back thing is just because Puel always employs lots of left backs. I wish he also had a penchant for world-class right-backs, defensive midfielders and 30 goal a season forwards.

Hope you are wrong law101. Unless of course the Academy youngsters are suddenly all world beaters. We would be keen to "cash in" then of course...

Puel hasn't met the full squad yet how can he make a call on what he needs?

Surely we can't be expecting signings for a while yet?

Why are some fans getting so bothered about Saints apparent lack of movement in the transfer market? Some of our best signings Wanyama Mane and VvD) were secured right at the end of the transfer window. At the moment all Premiership teams seem to be quiet in the market, probably due to the Euros with gossip filling up newspaper space instead of firm signings.. There is after all another two months before the end of the transfer window. We have done very well bringing in new players as shown by our positional improvements in the last three years. Saint's board do things quietly and without the overblown PR of some clubs and that way is best!!!

Although there will be numerous training sessions , practice games etc, I can't really see that Puel can make accurate judgements on existing players until he sees them in proper competition? Replacements this summer are therefore likely to be based on Les Reed's opinions perhaps with input from Koeman prior to him leaving. I'm not slagging off Reed, but I don't think it's ideal.
