Blackstock set for new deal

Top scorer Dexter Blackstock is set to put pen to paper on a new three and a half year deal at Loftus Road.

Blackstock has been in negotiations over a new deal for some time but finally looks set to put pen to paper on a three and a half year contract this week.

The striker, who has 12 goals already this season, had been attracting interest from Wolves and Fulham according to newspaper reports, although whether this was just paper talk or an agent trying to improve the contract offer on the table from QPR isn’t clear - with the best will in the world it is hard to imagine Blackstock making much impact in the Premiership.

Blackstock, who was signed by Gary Waddock from Southampton in 2006 for around £500k, is well on course to better the 14 goals he scored for Rangers in his first season here however he has recently been used as an impact substitute by manager Paulo Sousa. The Mirror reports today that the new contract will earn Blackstock £15,000 a week.

In other news two more QPR players have been called up for international duty, Heidar helguson is in the Iceland squad for their friendly match against Liechtenstein on Wednesday February 11. Helguson already has 37 caps and five goals for his country and scored on his last outing against Malta. Angelo Balanta, currently on loan at Wycombe, is on standby for the England Under 19s ahead of their friendly with Spain in Bournemouth on February 10.

Midfielder Mikele Leigertwood has reiterated his desire to stay with the club after Wolves dropped out of the running to sign him. Leigertwood told QPR World: “There has been a bit in the paper about whether I am going or not but I have been told that I am not going anywhere and I do not really want to go anywhere. So as long as people are happy to keep me here then I am happy to stay.

"When I came I knew what was going to happen. Probably people wanted it to happen quicker than it is but these things take time. But it is an exciting project that I want to be part of."

The rumour mill has today linked QPR with a move for Hull’s Caleb Folan although again, as with the last time this story was mooted, whether Hull would be willing to allow a first team player to leave as they sink closer to the drop zone with each passing week is debatable - especially as Phil Brown has recently fallen out with Marlon King who may now join Middlesbrough. Boro are also set to sign long term Rangers target Ben Watson from Palace for £2m. The R’s are also said to be interested in signing Marcus Bent who is out of favour at Birmingham City. Off the pitch Flavio Briatore has been linked with a takeover offer for Italian side Torino although Briatore has often said that he is a supporter of Torino’s big city rivals Juventus.
