Derby Down Under - Birthday Wish
Derby Down Under - Birthday Wish
Friday, 14th Mar 2008 13:10 by Daniel J Sewart

With my birthday falling this Saturday, I initially had a win against Man U on my wish list for the day.

After Wednesday night I have revised that wish to not having our pride handed to us on a plate again.

When you make the commitment to write an article about your favorite sporting team, a team who you would go to the ends of the earth for should the need arise, weeks like this one are the hardest. The Chelsea game was purely unacceptable and although the opposition was in a different class, the inability of the Rams squad to show some bottle and scrap for every ball that is there to be won is mystifying.

After a defeat such as this you can usually take heart in the fact that another game is rolling round again in three days. Sadly when that game is against the only team in the league better than the one that flogged us 6-1 it is difficult to see things getting much better.

Sure we were unlucky to lose the brick wall that is Alan Stubbs and we capitulated after a disgraceful penalty decision that will see Lampard under consideration when Hollywood begins casting for the new Superman movie. I hope when he watches the incident, the club captain is deeply embarrassed by what was the best dive since the Sydney Olympics.

The only highlight of the game for me was the continuing development of Jay McEveley. His efforts in creating something from the back, crossing after long runs out wide and getting in the face of Chelsea players showed why this boy will be a great player for the Rams in years to come.

Sure he can mis-time the odd clearance or make some interesting decisions in his distribution but if I was under the type of pressure that the Rams midfield allow their defenders to be put under, I would be setting a machine gun nest up in our goal rather than putting myself through what must be the most sapping mental and physical onslaught week in, week out.

Jay also seems to take a pummeling on the message boards and I feel is often unfairly maligned considering the circumstances he must defend under. I tip my hat to jay as while watching the game only he provided anything for fans to smile about. The strength on the ball he showed to beat two Chelsea attackers which included a clever turn and run was exactly the type of positive play the Rams have been unable to produce all season.

So with my birthday wish revised I have to admit that I still hold a hope that a miracle may occur and against the odds the Rams may secure only their second win of the season against the side most likely to win the title this season. In the immortal words of John Lennon “You may say I’m a dreamer… but I’m not the only one”.

If I wasn’t then I am afraid I would be finding this season even harder to take.

C’mon Ewe Rams! :0)
