Clough / Taylor statue a bit rich for some!?
Clough / Taylor statue a bit rich for some!?

DCFC have launched their fundraising campaign to erect a statue of Clough & Taylor at Pride Park Stadium. Fans can donate or even just buy some of the official merchandise to support the cause.

Raising the funds is well underway as announced recently on the clubs official site (read about it here).

There is no doubt about the need to acknowledge their contribution to the Rams and a statue would definitely immortalise them forever more. But what has raised the eyebrows of many is the cost of some of the ways in which you can support the project and be recognised for doing so.

Donations are welcomed but proceeds from t-shirt’s, an official DVD, postcards and even coasters will assist in making the project possible. You can see the full range on the DCFC website here.

Then of course is you have a spare £1,972 you can get a Limited Edition Bronze Maquette. Now as I had never heard of a Maquette, I was hoping that for that price it meant a hollow bronze statue filled with diamonds. After checking the definition online I am sad to report that this is not the case.

If you feel that just less than 2k is not a large enough contribution, you can have your very own personalized plaque on the actual monument for a cool £5,000. At that price I would hope that perhaps the statue could be trucked from home to home in the off season, so each plaque purchaser could have a share but this seems unlikely.

Here in Australia I purchased a brick with a plaque on it to commemorate the legends of my Australian Rules team which cost me what I thought was a generous $250 (approx 115 pounds) at the time.

I now feel like I may have snatched a bargain as if I hold onto that brick long enough I may be able to sell it at some stage for a massive profit, especially if the going rate on plaques at DCFC is anything to go by.

Taking my tongue out of my cheek for a moment, it is a great decision to honor theses two men who gave Derby more success than they could have ever dreamed of. I hope that the target is met swiftly so the statue can be on display for all to see.

The one thing I, and perhaps many Derby fans would have liked is for a way in which more people could have been associated with the project for a lesser cost.

Clough and Taylor were battlers and no matter how much success they achieved always remembered the importance of the fans to a club. Especially Clough who was well known for his generosity and support for the working class.

Merchandise is all well and good but it would be nice that supporters could point, to perhaps a board inside the stadium with the names of those who made a set contribution listed, and say ‘we helped to build that statue’.

I think both Brian and Peter would have wanted it that way.
