Match Report:

A brace from Campbell, and a Davies penalty completed a comfortable victory for the Rams after Referee Miller had reduced the home side to nine players.

Peterborough, Charters, 12 real ales, a good atmosphere with both home and away fans mixing, it was tempting to almost stay and forget the match.

London Road, low terraces behind each goal, both packed, and two stands a proportion of one allocated to Derby, 500 seats and one small toilet area, things they really ought to tell you before you leave the pub.

Derby with Hunt back for the defence went with a pairing of Steve Davies and DJ Campbell upfront and four across the centre of the park meaning very little width.

Posh had Izale McLeod and Jake Livermore in their ranks and McLeod let loose a fierce drive which thankfully was the wrong side of the post. Livermore was roundly booed when he got close to the visitors end.

Davies showed flashes of skill and the way he turns his marker offers more promise than Hulse and Porter combined. He can head too and only a point blank save from Lewis prevents the Rams taking the lead after twenty minutes.

On the half hour mark, Craig Morgan totals Campbell on the touch line and as the striker gets up referee Miller shows Morgan a straight red for the two footed challenge. In the stand directly in front of the incident the punishment seems harsh at the time although watching it after the game, perhaps the ref got it right, intent more than actual injury.

Ten Posh men hold on without much difficulty until Campbell gets ahead of his marker in the box, a leg stretches out attempting to whip the ball off the strikers feet, a tumble and a penalty given. Miller makes his mark again by flashing a further red card this time to Bennett and Peterborough are down to nine.

Davies coolly slots home and Derby go into the break a goal to the good.

As we ended the first with a goal so too we start the second, Campbell’s rasping shot rebounds off keeper Lewis and falls kindly for the Leicester loanee who fires home at the second attempt.

Despite being down to nine men Peterborough battle and fight for everything adopting a 3-3-2 formation which sees Derby on the occasional back foot.

Porter replaces Davies and Commons replaces Savage as the game opens up. Commons finds Campbell at the back post with a quality cross and DJ adds his second and the Rams third.
Clough then gives Anderson a run out for the final few minutes at the expense of Barker and the Rams see out the match with a couple of good saves from Bywater.

So three vital points for the Rams made easier courtesy of the two sending offs and the day was made complete with another stop at Charters (now down to eleven real ales) on the way back to the station.

If only all away days were like this.

Man Of The Match:

Steven Davies.

What The Gaffer Thought:

Nigel Clough speaking to dcfc.co.uk after the match:

"There is no question that Peterborough having two players sent off in the first half changed the course of the game. However, as strange as it may sound, I actually thought we were better when the game was eleven verses eleven".

"We started in a very positive way and looked sharp and up for it; some of the chances we created in the first half an hour were excellent".

"The penalty before half time was a crucial moment and then scoring so early in the second half effectively wrapped up the points".

"I am disappointed that we didn't kick on after the third and we became a little sloppy at times, but these are the kind of habits we need to eradicate from the team".

"Steven Davies was the best player on the pitch for the hour he featured for us; he showed again what a good player he is and what we have been missing while he has been out injured.

"He looked a huge threat and put himself about physically".

"I have said before and will continue to say it; if he keeps himself fit and healthy and puts a run of games together he can be a vital player for us and someone who can make a big impact in this division.

"Shaun Barker was another standout player on the afternoon. He showed tremendous leadership at the back, heading everything and throwing himself in front of the ball whenever we needed him to".

"He's been out a while and in an ideal world probably needs more time to integrate back into the side, but we need him right now and he has stepped up".

"His centre half partner Jake Buxton was also excellent, as was our goalkeeper Stephen Bywater, who made more saves in the second half than he should have had to".

"We don't know at this stage whether or not we will have a game next weekend; it will depend what happens in the replay between Brentford and Doncaster".

"But we will be preparing well and working hard in training as we have been doing. It is important we build on our last two positive results."
