Leddy and Ireland Go Through
Leddy and Ireland Go Through

Academy first-year scholar Jonny Leddy and the Republic of Ireland U17s qualified for the elite phase of qualifying for the European Championship despite losing their final mini-group game 1-0 to the Czech Republic in Kazakhstan this morning. The Kazakhs pushed them close, beating Liechtenstein 8-0, but Ireland’s superior goal difference saw them into second place behind the Czechs.

The midfielder, who netted a penalty in his team’s 8-0 victory over Liechtenstein in their opening match last Wednesday, won his fifth U17 cap before being replaced in the 75th minute.

If the Irish progress through from their elite qualifying mini-group in the spring they will reach the finals, which are being played in Slovenia in May.
