Bristol City Not After Davies

Bristol City boss Derek McInnes has refuted claims that his club is in talks with Derby County regarding Blues target Steve Davies.

McInnes said: "Steve Davies is one we are aware of, but he is not the type of striker we require right now. There has been no contact with Derby and we have definitely not made an offer.”

The Robins are understood to have agreed a fee of £1.5 million with West Ham for Sam Baldock, a player who was interesting the Blues at the end of last season, although Town are no longer believed to be after the former MK Dons man.

Town have been chasing 24-year-old Davies all summer, but the clubs have been unable to agree a fee with the Rams wanting £1 million for the ex-Tranmere man and the Blues looking to pay rather less.

Speaking on Saturday, manager Paul Jewell said: "I spoke to Derby and Nigel Clough over the summer and asked about the fee and the fee is far in excess [of what we can afford]. Don’t ask me what that is because that’s between the clubs, but I haven’t got that amount of money.”

A big striker in the Davies mould is likely to be top of Jewell’s wish list. Jewell also held brief talks with former England international Emile Heskey but the Blues’ interest doesn’t appear to have gone further than that and the 34-year-old, who is currently training with Wigan, appears unlikely to be on his way to Portman Road.

This was the week we were dreading when the fixtures came out, but we ended it with a rousing final 20 minutes against Liverpool, to finish with four points from our games against three of the much vaunted giants of Premier League football.
