Like many foreigners once they have grasped English it is hard to stop them from showing off their new linguistic prowess. Gus Poyet is no exception and in last nights London Evening Standard he said he fancied coming back to Leeds, but it would appear we would be just a stepping stone as he fancies being Arsene Wenger's successor also!
Poyet arrived at Leeds as Dennis Wise's assistant during 2006/07, despite being unable to stop us sliding into League One, Wise and Poyet engineered a terrific start to the following campaign as we clawed back the handicap of a 15 point deduction for going into administration.
However a year after his arrival, it was London Calling for Gus and he left Leeds to take up the role as Juande Ramos's aide at one of his former clubs Tottenham who of course are our opponents next Sunday in the FA Cup whilst Gus takes his present side Brighton to north London to face Arsenal.
Poyet said, 'I want to manage at the highest level and would love to manage Chelsea or Arsenal. Why not?
'Does my Chelsea or Tottenham past mean I cannot be Arsenal manager? Look, I've been at Leeds [as assistant to Dennis Wise] and the relationship between Leeds and Chelsea was not the best.
'If you ask any Leeds fan, my relationship with them was absolutely exceptional.
'I would love to go back to Leeds because they know how much I care for the club and how much I will give the club. Same with Arsenal. The only thing is I need to be ready.'
It is fair to say that our results did drop off after Poyet went to Spurs. Wise too (thankfully) had gone by the end of January 2008 to work for Mike Ashley. Poyet was strongly linked with a return to suceed Gary McAllister but I remember reading an interview with our glorious chairman Ken Bates who told the Uruguayan "not an ffin chance..." Papa Smurf clearly in an unforgiving mood at the time.
Just under a year ago when Brighton won 2-1 at ER with Leeds Managerless Gus spoke openly about one-day being the Leeds manager, but questioned the timing.
Inevitably when Warnock does leave, Poyet's name will be thrown into the hat and will draw a lot of support from the Leeds fans as he is young, ambitious and he has got Brighton playing excellent football. So Gus for Leeds, why not? Unless of course the Gunners want him first!
