Cardiff City Captain Highlights Derby Games

Cardiff City captain Darren Purse highlights the two derby games as key battles next season

Wales on Sunday asked the captains of both South Wales clubs to highlight their five key games ahead of the new season with Purse picking out the two derby games within his handful.

The games take place at the Liberty Stadium on November 30 - live on Sky with the return currently scheduled for April 4 although that is likely to change when the police have had their say - and quite possibly the TV cameras again.

It will be the first derby league games for ten seasons - Swansea won the last encounter at the Vetch 2-1 which was followed by a goalless draw at Ninian Park.

Speaking to Wales on Sunday, Purse said “There’s going to be big interest in these games and I’ve got the feeling Cardiff supporters have been waiting for the chance for a derby for a long time with all the bragging rights at stake.

“Like I said, there’s been a long time since the last games between the clubs so the atmosphere should be brilliant but although the winners will get the bragging rights in Wales, I think the bigger picture has to be more important and that means promotion.”

Purse also highlighted home games against Southampton, Birmingham and Bristol City in his key five.

Annual accounts show that the club will have to sell players if we don't go up
The club released the annual accounts for the 2022/3 season this week, and despite the headline figure of an overall loss of £33.7 million, we’re not in danger of any points deduction for now. But the accumulated losses mean that player sales will be inevitable in the summer if we remain in the Championship.

Leeds frustrated by well-drilled Sunderland
We needed to win this game to regain the momentum that seemed to have gone over the international break, but this was another pedestrian performance, without any of the intensity that was needed to break down a determined Sunderland defence.
