Wrexham Preview

The two sides could not have asked for more different seasons if they tried. While Wrexham have found themselves falling from one disaster to another, their fans will wonder if tomorrow is the last game that they will play in their current guise. Problems with owners (where have we heard that before?) and administration have combined to seal their relegation to League Two with the Swans taking their position in League One following last Saturday's victory at Bury.

Wrexham do have the one bright spot and that is the LDV Vans Trophy that sits proudly in their trophy cabinet following last month's 2-0 win over Southend at the Millennium Stadium - a victory that ultimately derailed the Southend train that at the time was looking pretty much unstoppable. Thank you for that Wrexham.

This is the second time that the two clubs have met in the final - Wrexham triumphing 2-0 at the Vetch back in 2001 - ironically Lee Trundle was on the scoresheet that night as we hope he will be tomorrow. Wrexham have made this competition their own with 4 triumphs in it's 5 year existence - Cardiff wining the other one in 2002 when they beat us at Ninian Park.

It will of course be a promotion party at the Vetch tomorrow with the added celebration of it being the last competitive fixture for the Swans at the ground. Quite what remains of that ground at the end of the game remains to be seen but win or lose tomorrow night and there will be a celebration to be had come the final whistle.

For exiles who cannot make it to the game, the kick off is at 6.55pm and it will be screened live on BBC 2 Wales which is available on channel 961 via Sky Digital systems. Prior to the game, Amy Prosser will also be presenting Lee Trundle with his JackArmy.net player of the season award as voted for by you. The 'A Touch Far Vetched' team will also be making a presentation to Alan Curtis' youth set up at the Vetch of the profits from issue one of the fanzine.

Garry Monk is a fitness doubt for the Swans due to a slight injury he picked up on Saturday- Andy Gurney should come into the starting line up if Monk misses out. Kevin McLeod also limped out of the reserves 2-0 defeat at home to Swindon yesterday.

A boost from the Wrexham camp for us comes in the form that Darren Ferguson will most likely miss the game through ligament damage. Manager Denis Smith though is confident that his players will deliver in what, for many of them, will be their last game for the club even if they survive the battle they face during the summer.

A reasonable sized crowd is expected at the Vetch for the last game and payment is on the gate for most of the people expected to be there.

It should be a fitting send off for the Vetch and we hope for the game that does the old girl proud and maybe, just maybe, we should be slightly confident that we will put our name on the trophy for the first time and pick up the extra £50,000 that wining tomorrow night will bring (£50,000 already being secured for reaching the final)

This time it really is, the end of an era
