James started his career with Darlington, as a trainee through their youth system before Newcastle paid £250,000 for his services in March 1998.
He never made the grade in the Premiership, making just one substitute appearance. He had two loan spells at Hartlepool before joining Exeter in the summer of 2002.
He joined Doncaster two seasons later but he didn't score in his first season there. Last season he made over 40 appearances, scoring only five times.
