Mellor Likely To Be Missing For Preston

Preston are likely to arrive at the Liberty on Tuesday without the services of top scorer Neil Mellor

Swansea City will return to league action against North End after the highs of the weekend victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

And their job will be made easier if Preston are - as reported - likely to be without former Liverpool player Neil Mellor.

Mellor pulled up in training last week complaining of a sore groin and went into the weekend under treatment in a desperate bid to get him fit for Tuesday night.

Manager Alan Irvine told the Lancashire Evening Post "We are hoping it is nothing to worry about.

"He has had problems around his hips and groin since he had that accident. But if it is directly because of that I don't know.

"Neil came off during training complaining of a wee bit of a groin problem.

"We will wait and see how he is over the next couple of days. He could be joining in again over the weekend, we just don't know at this stage.

"It was a bit heavy on the training ground and we were working quite hard. It could have been because of that.

"We don't think it is anything major, but we won't know until we have had a good look at him."

Preston's woes could be doubled with defender Neal Trotman also a doubt "Neal has tweaked his medial ligament," said Irvine. "It is nothing major. He did it in a tackle and we are hoping it will only keep him out for a few days.

"We are not expecting him to be sidelined for long. He is running, but he can't do a few other things for a short while until it settles down.

"It's a shame for the lad because he is absolutely desperate to play after such a long time out injured.

"But you get these niggling little secondary injuries when you are trying to come back after a long spell out."

The club released the annual accounts for the 2022/3 season this week, and despite the headline figure of an overall loss of £33.7 million, we’re not in danger of any points deduction for now. But the accumulated losses mean that player sales will be inevitable in the summer if we remain in the Championship.
