Has Neil ever recovered from the Barnsley bashing?
I often recall that chapter in Wor Jackie Charlton's brilliant autobiography, when Big Jack was heckled by Newcastle supporters when they failed to sign striker Eric Gates who significantly joined Sunderland instead rubbing salt into Geordie wounds.
Jack argued that once the fans were on your back that was it, time to go so he duly walked out on Newcastle and went on to enjoy a glorious decade managing the Irish.
Last night, at one club where Jack did enjoy some club success Middlesbrough, the knives were out again for Neil Warnock and unrest not seen since Barnsley a month ago the fans basically told Neil Warnock where he can go.
A stream of angry callers on the post match Yorkshire Radio Moan-In followed suit, just one solitary caller in support of Neil Warnock. It is hard to argue with the stats, Leeds are solidly stuck in mid-table, eight points adrift of the play-offs and ominously the same amount from the drop-zone.
Simon Grayson was sacked with a better record than Warnock, one caller even suggested reappointing Larry and Neil Redfearn was mentioned also. I do agree with the theme however that the quick fix has not worked. Warnock was the right man for the job a year ago and from top-to-bottom at the club,the hope was he could sneak us back into the Premiership via hard work and dogged determination.
For whatever reason, it has not worked out and even those not chanting for Warnock's head such as myself will be counting the days until he packs his bags from his rented cottage in Leeds and retires to his farm in Devon.
I do have a lot of sympathy for the Leeds boss, he has had to rebuild with one hand tied behind his back, due to the uncertainty of ownership of the club targets have gone begging. He has signed some good players, the criminally underused Norris, Michael Tonge, Diouf and the pre-ankle injury Rodolph Austin.
There are some signings such as Steve Morison no doubt in time we will reap the benefits from.
There are others such as Ryan Hall and Habib Habibou that beggar belief
i go back to the same question i asked post Barnsley, who would realistically replace Warnock should the axe fall? Nigel Adkins is a popular theme but realistically with the club in such internal disarray would the former Scunny physio risk his reputation and come to us when it is likely he could get another Premiership job?
No doubt like me you've seen that txt going round or heard the rumours that a certain Ken Bates still retains a significant holding in the football club, GFH Capital have realised they have bitten off more than they can chew and the rejection of a bid from a Yorkshire Consortium was merely a face saving exercise ahead of a high-profile, money-spinning FA Cup tie against the reigning English Champions.
Until the boardroom mess is sorted out, whoever sits in the dugout has little chance of achieving success on the field of play!
