Rosco to the rescue! Leeds United 1 Sheffield Weds 1

Ross McCormack scored a sensational goal to deny Sheffield Wednesday a derby-day win at Elland Road.

The striker, who's future is under intense speculation at the moment grabbed a 56th minute equaliser to ensure honours were even in a competitively fought Yorkshire derby at Elland Road.

Leeds gave a start to Dominic Poleon, Noel Hunt dropping to the bench and welcomed back El Hadji Diouf amongst the subs who like McCormack has had his future debated of late.

It was a solid opening self hour or so with nothing between the sides. Poleon was giving Buxton a torrid run around and might have drawn a penalty out of another referee when his shirt was clearly tugged.KcCormack drew a fine save from Kirkland who tipped his dipping drive over, at the other end Paddy Kenny managed to smother Nuhius header from Macguires corner.

With a clear height advantage, Wednesday always looked a danger in the box and on 36 minutes converted a corner into a goal. Antonio was given the freedom of Elland Road to head across the box at the far post and former Hull midfielder Kamil Zayatte powered a header past Kenny for his first goal in Sheffield Wednesday colours.

McDermott replaced Paul Green at half-time, whether or not the former Derby and Doncaster man suffered a knock or was at fault for the goal remains to be seen, but he became embroiled in a heated debate with Paddy Kenny and Stephen Warnock about who should have picked up Antonio. Michael Tonge took his place for the second half.

Nine minutes after the restart, Leeds were level. McCormack received the ball wide right, beat Zayatte by pushing the ball past him, running on and scoring what surely his a contender for his finest goal in Leeds colours and hopefully not his last.

Much has been made over the Scots' celebration, which consisted of gesturing to the Kop to raise the noise levels then cupping his ear in the direction of the East Stand where our owners sit, obviously you can read too much into this but let's hope this moment of brilliance will put to bed once and for all that McCormack is not for sale.

McDermott threw on Matt Smith for Varney to put his own giants amongst the ones in black and yellow shirts. Smith did not really carve out that many chances today. At the other end Leeds escaped a scare when Pearce scrambled the ball out for a corner following a melee in the box when sub Magomma nearly connected to put the ball past Kenny and Zayatte drew another excellent save from the ex Sheffield United keeper who is ckearly on top form at the moment.

McDermott's last throw of the dice was to put Diouf on for the last five minutes of normal time and the five minutes of time added on. He cut something of a portly figure and didnt even get a touch, although he seemed to want to take the free-kick Leeds were awarded in the 92nd minute that McCormack ended up taking but shot into the Wednesday wall.

So another day and another draw. To be fair, Wednesday played far better than their form suggested and on reflection we will be happy with a point but as we head for the last throes of the transfer window, the talk of departures is quite worrying when it is clear what we really need is investment.
