Leeds United: Whites Seek Second Pre-Season Success

After recording an anticipated victory over National League North side Harrogate Town on Wednesday, with the Whites emerging as 4-2 victors at Thorp Arch, Thomas Christiansen's charges will today pursue a second success of pre-season away to Guiseley.

Leeds United shall embark upon a short excursion to Nethermoor today; their motives principally concerned with preparing for the new season. It is seldom the case in football, that victory should not be an immediate priority for a manager and his players, but games of this nature serve a clear purpose.

However, pre-season friendlies, though concerned mostly with fitness and preparation, can still prove ample ammunition for opportunistic critics.

It is for that reason, then, that head coach Thomas Christiansen will wish to record a straightforward and trouble-free victory; with his players each receiving a sufficient amount of game time, so as for them to be adequately prepared for the forthcoming season, one that will inevitably present its many challenges.

Wednesday's match against Harrogate was archetypal of a Leeds United pre-season fixture. As a great many people had envisaged, the Whites raced into a comfortable 3-0 lead with midfielder Madger Gomes - a recent acquisition from Liverpool - among the scorers. And then came the Harrogate renaissance; this would prove an ephemeral one, but the two goals netted by the non-league outfit did serve to perturb some United supporters.

A timely contribution at close proximity from young forward Lee Erwin, who spent last season sporting the colours of Oldham Athletic in a loan spell, spared Leeds any form of ignominy; indeed, had Town equalised, United would most certainly have been subjected to at least a scattering of pejorative remarks.

On the last occasion that Leeds and Guiseley met, a team comprised mostly of fledgling youngsters inflicted defeat upon the National League side after trailing 3-0. All was well come the game's conclusion, but at the exact juncture at which the Whites conceded the third goal, each of their players was a recipient of odium after an omnishambles of a first-half.

Christiansen and his players will doubtless be keen to avoid embarrassment, with an ideal outcome being as follows; minutes aplenty for players in need of match sharpness, zilch in the way of injuries and victory. The last of that trinity is least important, but should it not be secured, you'll know about it.

Annual accounts show that the club will have to sell players if we don't go up
The club released the annual accounts for the 2022/3 season this week, and despite the headline figure of an overall loss of £33.7 million, we’re not in danger of any points deduction for now. But the accumulated losses mean that player sales will be inevitable in the summer if we remain in the Championship.

Leeds frustrated by well-drilled Sunderland
We needed to win this game to regain the momentum that seemed to have gone over the international break, but this was another pedestrian performance, without any of the intensity that was needed to break down a determined Sunderland defence.
