Barry George’s release is good omen for Leeds

Barry George was released from jail on Friday, only to confess to the News of the World that he is in fact… a Leeds United fan.

As you may have read in the press this weekend, our latest celebrity fan was released after spending eight years inside for allegedly murdering the lovely Gill Dando back in 2000. Apparently it couldn’t have been him, as he was too busy stalking another woman at the time, and that has to be a pretty good alibi in anyone’s book.

But today’s News of the World revealed another shocking fact about our Barry. Like any other self-respecting fortysomething with mental health problems, he is in fact a Leeds United fan. He told the paper â€Å"I’ve been a Leeds supporter since 1972 when I went to Wembley and saw them in the FA cup final against Arsenal.”

Barry complained how much the world has changed since he went inside. â€Å"I can’t believe how many mobile phones people carry and everywhere is a no-smoking zone.” And of course, there is also one other key respect life is very different to the day George was first arrested back in May 2000.

Back then Leeds had just qualified for the Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League. Then he comes out eight years later and…hey what happened? But he is determined to make up for lost time and now he has his freedom he is planning to visit Elland Road as soon as he can.

And with his £1 million compensation from the authorities, perhaps he could even be persuaded to invest some money in the club. Barry’s release could be the omen we’ve been waiting for. He was sent down just as Leeds United’s dark days were about to begin, and he’s out just as we embark on a promotion campaign to start the long climb back to our rightful place.

As the man himself says about Leeds â€Å"just like me, the only way from now on is up!”

This was the week we were dreading when the fixtures came out, but we ended it with a rousing final 20 minutes against Liverpool, to finish with four points from our games against three of the much vaunted giants of Premier League football.
