80's continued: Norway to Bolton and Leeds v Oldham

Yet more of your 80's memories - keep them coming in folks, all entries will go into a draw for a copy of my book!

Atle Jensen (Norway) writes: "I was 17 when I went to Leeds the first time. It was around Easter in the first season in the old second division in 1983, air tickets cost a fortune, so me and a friend took the train from Norway to Gothenburg in Sweden, the ferry to Harwich, train to London and then to the North. It took almost two days to get from Norway to Burnden Park for Bolton Leeds. David Harvey and Peter Lorimer played, we won 2-1 thanks to a Paul Hart winning goal I think. We were sitting on the main stand, watching the fantastic Leeds fans behind the goal. Made us prouder than ever.

"Two days later Elland Road was full of optimism, promotion was within reach, Oldham should be an easy win. But it ended 0-0, two young Norwegians learned straight away what its like to be a Leeds fan always be prepared for disappointments. Ive still got Yorkshire Evening Post from the day after the Oldham game: Time is running out for goalless United.

"Could anyone have been more right back in 1983?

"Have been to England many times since that Easter, but will never forget the first time."

Les Ives (North Yorks) writes: "Although people remember leeds back in the eighties for small on good football and big on trouble - well theyd be right(!) but can anyone ever remember a better atmosphere at any ground than in the 87 season when Billys team got to the play offs and the FA semi final? Anyone remember the nuculer bomb going off in the Geldard when Ormsmby scored against QPR or the day out at Hillsbrough. A mate of mine got a seat with the Coventry fans and said that most of them sat in stunned amazement at the Leeds support.Iv'e seen good Leeds backing since but nothing like 87!"

Brian Three Lions writes: "I was a big fan of Brendan Ormsby, Billy picked him up dead cheap from Villa and I honestly do not think he let the side down (bar that mistake in the 1987 Semi v Cov but he had been brilliant all season and it is sad he is sometimes remembered for that mistake - it was his goal in R6 v QPR that got us through - remember!) it was a shame he suffered injury problems after that and eventually drifted down the leagues. I remember reading an article about him working as a post-man in Leeds! Unbelievable! its a far cry from the footballers of today who I'm sure won't be avoiding rabid dogs to shove junk-mail through people's letterboxes just to make ends meet - shocking!"

Keep em coming folks and to make it even more worth your while than to see your name on TEAB.org, all entries will go into a hat on Friday and the one pulled out will win a copy of my book "There's a light that never goes out" which came out in August and it was all about my time in local pub football - a guaranteed hilarious read, even if it isn't about the mighty Leeds!

Sol Bamba passed away on Saturday at the tragically early age of 39. The tribute on the club’s official website was one of many, as the football world paid it’s respects to a defender who was highly regarded by everyone in the game who came into contact with him.
Patient Leeds overcome Hull with strong second half performance
At half-time this game was well and truly in the balance, and Hull City had enjoyed some moments in the first half. But once Leeds had opened the scoring in the second they had no response, and it was comfortable for Leeds in the end.

A little less conversation, a little more action please
Daniel Farke did his best to hide his frustration at this week’s pre-match media briefing, and while he urged everyone connected with the club to pull together, he acknowledged that although we continue to be linked with a large number of different players in the media, it’s approaching the time when we have to get some of these deals over the line.
