Revered and Reviled - has Don been "airbrushed" from history?

A new book aims to raise money for a long overdue tribute to Don.

Author Richard Sutcliffe this week launches his new-book "Revie: Revered and Reviled" £16.99 from www.greatnorthernbooks.co.uk

Mr Sutcliffe is a lifelong Leeds United fan and also the chief Sports-writer on the Yorkshire Post. He today told the YEP that he hopes some of the proceeds from the book can go towards the £90,000 needed to built a tribute to the Leeds United legend.

However as Mr Sutcliffe points out, outside of Leeds Revie has been effectively airbrushed from history.

Despite contributions from non-Leeds heroes such as Kevin Keegan and Colin Todd, there is still a feeling of resentment amongst Leeds fans that Don is not so fondly remembered as his contemporaries of his era in the 1960's and 1970's notably Bill Shankly, Sir Matt Busby and Brian Clough.

It could be argued that much of this is down to his abortive tenure as England manager between 1974-1977. Having failed to get England to the 1978 World Cup, Don left the national post to take up a similar role with the United Arab Emirates. This provoked outrage from the FA, including a ten-year-ban from managing in England - which was later overturned.

When Revie died in 1989, it was noted that the FA failed to send a representitive to his funeral in Edinburgh.

Times most certainly change, tomorrow night our opponents Leicester City are managed by an ex-England manager who would clearly sell his Grandmother fpr a fast-buck and the present incumbent earns £6m a year for very little return and can't even string a coherent sentence in English together.

I urge every Leeds fan to buy the book and read a balanced view about the real Don, not the rubbish the tabloids printed and hopefully one day we will have more than just a small-stand and a cul-de-sac to remember him by at Elland Road.
