June 6th D-Day Anniversary... 12:21 - Jun 6 with 1016 views1885_SFC

An interesting fact that some of you may not be aware of; there was actually a 6th beach that was to be attacked by British commandos - but was never implemented:

Interesting, didn't know about Band Beach.
47 Commando were deployed inland to attack and capture, from the rear, Port en Bessin, a small harbour between Gold and Omaha. This ensured the establishment of a location for the allied fuel dumps and a landfall for the PLUTO. Visited in early March this year, beautiful, peaceful day.
Large, memorial overlooking Gold Beach opened today to commemorate and honour the British killed during Operation Overlord, over 22,000 names.

I hope to visit the new D-day memorial in France when things get better... hopefully Spring or early Summer next year.

Port en Bessin was the town used by film makers to depict No. 4 Commando's attack on Ouistreham in The Longest Day. It actually doesn't bear much resemblance, especially the Riva Bella Casino which is shown in the film as a proper casino building but by D-Day had been levelled by the Germans and turned into a formidable strongpoint. Before covid you could get the overnight ferry to Ouistreham from Portsmouth and spend the day exploring Sword Beach, Pegasus Bridge and Merville Battery. From the top of the slopes overlooking the beaches you can look inland and see the tower blocks of Caen in the distance. It's sobering to think that it took Monty and the British another six weeks to take the city.

Indeed, the British & Canadians lost 50,000 troops over the battles for Caen that went on for several weeks. Seeing as the total losses for British, Canadian & Polish forces were 83,000 for the Normandy Campaign - it shows what a bloodbath Caen was.

Apart from the memorial aspect, it is a lovely area to visit with friendly people, good food and wine as well as a few nice ales and ciders. We were there 3 or 4 years ago on the anniversary, and the effort that goes into accommodating visitors, the re-enactment groups etc is brilliant. At one of the presentations, we met an old codger, sadly now blind who was there just to soak up the atmosphere one last time. He helped instal the harbour and relished telling my wife and I about what the experience was like. The museums and assembled military vehicles on the beach was impressive, and very interesting. The cemeteries, UK and US are immaculate, and sobering. My US friend took us to the grave of the soldier that the story for Saving Private Ryan was based on.

Cheers for that. We're already browsing possible dates, etc for next year. We're definitely going.
