Apparently work has restarted on the Bargate Quarter between The Bargate and Debenhams, should be finished in 3-4 years

there is a lot of residential on it but I think it is higher end rather than student flats, but on the ground floor there is also a lot of retail space

HMV has opened its by the Bargate, it is a totally different store from the old one, only around 20% is dedicated to music ie cd's and vinyl, the rest is about t shirts pictures and pop art etc as well as equipment such as turntables and headsets

Southampton has had more than its fair share of shopping disasters.

East Street Centre

Bargate Centre

The High Street is a poor reflection of what it once was.

The Marland's does anyone go there?.

C&A ,Plummers ,Debenhams,Woolworths etc all gone.

Southampton has so much potential but rarely lives up to it.

Take away John Lewis and Marks and Spencers from West Quay, would anyone want to pay those parking charges to go there?

Gonna take a look next time in town. To be fair and towards the latter years, the old HMV had started going that way as they had to move with the times of people generally downloading everything. Anyone else recall the days when HMV was down Hanover Buildings nearer to what was Debenhams? Spent many an hour in there when i should have been at the Tech College doing my City and Guilds courses......

Being a proud Sotonian I still have to say that the city centre is a badly thought out, soulless dump. Aside from a few drinks if going to the football or the odd meal in a restaurant, I avoid it at all costs.

Agreed, Bicester.
That abomination that occupies the precinct now is an embarrassment.
Having to weave around some unfortunate sat on the ground doesn't help either.
I feel sorry for Southampton youth now, in my day there was a Top Rank Dancing, Ice Rink,Pier,Lido and some good Pubs, not those Bars they have now.
I am Southampton through and through but a lot of character and characters have gone.

Do people still go shopping? Seemed like everyone used to do that on a Saturday, but I genuinely haven't been "shopping" for at least 6 or 7 years, just no need to do it - pointless, waste of time, waste of parking costs - too much else to do and a better variety on the internet.

The only time i tend to go into Southampton these days is for Saints or a gig. I must say that whilst i agree with some of your thoughts, i do like the stretch from Bargate (East Street Junction) down towards Town Quay. Popped up a few weeks ago for a gig and went to one of the restaurants down there and was impressed. Admittedly it was late afternoon / early evening. The rest though is a bit of a Carbuncle as there is a lack of a joined up plan for the City Centre.

It went downhill when Tyrell and Greens went.
