And they don't seem to mind singing all the plastics from Windsor, Dorset and Malaysia spending in the club shop. Apart from that, they would much prefer socialism.

It is about England being the new promised land. Far more relevant than singing about some pretend fairy in the sky looking out for a few people (though some might like later verse about crushing the Scottish)

Plenty of people don’t like the anthem, but it’s only them that feels they have to all boo it like little sheep at the cup final because they perceive themselves as not English.

No idea! Mind, I was watching it in a pub in Basingstoke and was still trying to make sure my pint wasn't staring at anyone. A lot of people don't like the anthem or what it stands for. I personally don't mind the Queen, Anne, William or Harry, I think Charles and Eddie are a bit odd and that Andrew is a nonce. I won't boo the anthem but won't fawn over them either. I also understand why some Scousers feel that they don't identify with the rest of England

There is resentment after the proposed managed decline of the 80s. There's also the fact that there's a lot of Irish blood there as well. There's obviously the whole Hillsborough thing as well, where the establishment tried to cover up. Also, if loads of the rest of the country started having a go at the people of Southampton, calling them thieves, workshy, victims etc, then perhaps the people of Southampton may have such an attitude? I recently read this book, as it gives some of the answers to that question. I read it because I have an interest in a lot of thr culture from that area, but it is really quite interesting. I hadn't realised that up until Thatcher, they returned quite a few Tory MPs. There She Goes: Liverpool, a City on Its Own. And they are the only city in the country, which has seen decline and had names thrown at them? For a start, they have a successful football team to follow. They should be grateful they don't have to watch their team lose every week. [Post edited 18 May 2022 19:05]

Everton fans may take you up on that... But really, the book is a good read. I have an interest as I liked things like The End and a lot of the music. Same with a lotnof the Manchester stuff. Remember when they sang AR-GEN-TINA? Similar vibes

No doubt it's an interesting read. Personally, I can't stand Liverpool FC and their fans. Plastics aside, they want socialism? That's fine, we are a democracy. But they are terrible hypocrites. They welcome all the rich tourists spending in the club shop don't they because it's them buying the club shirts that enables them to buy the best players in the world. That process is not socialism, but they like it because it makes them successful. They welcome paying their players four hundred thousand pounds a week, and love the joy their overpaid rich and greedy players bring them on the pitch. They don't like greed unless they are wearing a Liverpool shirt? Salah is great isn't he. Three hundred grand a week wasn't enough for him, yet they sing his name. But they don't like the rich!!! Or greed so they say!!! They don't like the rich Tories, yet they love their football team being so rich, none of us can compete. They don't like being called thieves, yet it's only when we play them, they steal our tickets and cheer in our face in the home sections. They boo the royal family and cheer millionaires. They think Liverpool is so much worse off than Manchester, Birmingham, parts of London, parts of Portsmouth and Southampton even. And as for Everton fans, they don't boo the national anthem. Yeh, fair enough. But you'll find that there are a load of them that don't want all the foreign tourists etc that have taken the club from them. Same at United and may be the same at City, Newcastle etc in the future. I have no time for all the plastics etc, but then I don't deem them worthy of an opinion.

The problem is, they don't want the foreign tourists some of them may say, but it's them bringing their club huge amounts of money (merchandise, full stadium), enabling them to be the rich successful club they are all happy to cheer and literally cheer in our faces. But they can't stand "rich" can they. Unless, of course this level of money brings them joy, that seems to be ok in that case. [Post edited 18 May 2022 19:35]

Yep, and believe me, if Saints could swap me with my 2 x season tickets but very little other expenditure on the club, for 2 different fans who came over from Norway or Ireland every week and spent £300 in the club shop, they would. Every club would. BTW, I don't particularly like Liverpool Football Club (though it's Spurs that I really detest in thr Premier League), but am interested in fan culture. I don't like any of the so called top 6, but I can't stand Liverpool. Hypocritical and attention seeking scousers, mixed in with millions of plastics. Add Klopp to the mix, taking VD illegally (which the Liverpool fans didn't seem to mind), the only club to boo anthems, the only club to pelt missiles at coaches and the way they cheer in the home end of every ground like they are superior is enough for me. I enjoyed trips to Watford, Burnley, Brentford much more. Proper fans who know what it's like to be a fan.

It was before Thatcher in the 70s the Tories we’re getting voted out up there. The apathy and excuses towards the 39 dead Italians, getting the English banned from Europe (up until then the scousers were always on the England away scene) and the frequent use of blades on Merseyside didn’t endear them to most other football fans either. Yorkshire people and the North East had life just as hard in the 80s etc but they don’t hate England or feel the need to draw attention to themselves at every opportunity [Post edited 18 May 2022 20:09]
