Bringing Ings back would be another sign of desperation. Yes, he's better than what we have but he's so delicate we'd be lucky to get 10 games a season out of him. When he was here he lost interest & couldn't wait to get away. We need to look for players that have a future sell on value. At 29 Ings is not going to get any better. Also Saints are very lightweight & need some bigger more physical players. We get battered by teams that bully us. I know it's difficult to attract players to St Mary's but unless we intend to go into a veterans lge then we must avoid the likes of Phil Jones & Danny Ings.(we've already got a 41 year old keeper )

Some comparisons could be drawn with the situation with Mike Channon in the years 1975-79'
Channon demanded a transfer in the summer of 1975 but was refused by the club and stayed, after we failed to get promotion he left for Manchester City and had two poor years and was dropped from the England squad.
He returned to Saints just after the start of the 1979/80 season two months before he turned 31 and had three good seasons during exciting times.
No one called him a traitor and no one moaned about our recruiting process.

Whilst I agree that it is all about £'s and Ings certainly went for the money, it wasn't that much different in 1977, City weren't the biggest club in England , they had a decent season in 76/77 and were wanting to kick on, but there weren't a true big club such as Liverpool, United etc

Not as big as those two maybe, but had won the league, the Fa Cup, the league cup and the Cup Winners Cup in recent years, whereas Saints…?
Plus Channon had stayed with us in Div2 and there was none of the badge kissing bollox and slyness about the way he left. I forgive Channon that and even for turning out for the Blue Few. He went on in my opinion, to play some of the best football of his career in probably our best ever team. Halcyon days.
Whatever we say, we need a decent striker who can score goals, without doubt. Players of Ings quality, cost money. Who else could we get who we know will score goals? Ofcourse, wish we could find another Pelle, Tadic and Mane. We can't have Adams and Armstrong as our two main strikers next year, and I worry about only adding another young player up front who will likely be inconsistent. We need an experienced PL striker. Likewise in defence. We simply can't go with Salisu, Bednerak, Lyanco and Stephens again. We need to make changes as the defence was terrible last season.

Agree with this.
All I hear is "last pay day" and "mercenary" etc. Ings is not a Saints fan, that is media fabrication, but if we, as fans, want a proven [Premier League] goal scorer then Ings should be one of the first names on the scouting sheet that is achievable.
The bloke left to get as much money as possible before retiring, so what. He'd come back, score 10-15 goals and you'll all love him like the fickle fans we all are.

Whats the comparison with Channon? Not the same at all, football was a different beast back then. One player was a club legend, come through the ranks and and did his time here. The other is a journeyman striker that grew up nearby.
A better comparison would have been Kevin Davies, who wasnt great 2nd time round.
He's hardly going to be free is he.... He's not out of contract ffs.
Odd that the original poster of this thread thinks we would be lucky to get 10 games out of a player who, in the last 4 seasons, has played 24,38, 29 and 30 times...
"Playing Devil's Advocate since 15th January 2014"
didnt play much in a fairly average villa side probably tells you hes on the downside of his career and at the wage he would want plus a transfer fee i think the 25 million we got for him was the best deal and we should leave well alone
