October's clubfanzine charity
October's clubfanzine charity

As you may know, each month clubfanzine has a nominated charity across the network. This month's charity is one which is very much Dale related.

After RochdaleAFC.com's last PES2008 we made a small donation to Factor50 with some money raised on the night.

Shortly afterwards we received an e-mail thanking us and explaining in more depth what Factor50's aims are. Gill Nuttall from the charity gave us a brief insight.

"Firstly, I'd like to say a big thanks to you for inviting Factor 50 to be your nominated charity for October 2008.   I set up Factor 50 almost a year ago when I realised that a very close friend Jon Herron, was not going to survive Malignant Melanoma.   A few months after the launch of Factor 50, I became aware that Ernie Cooksey was also suffering from the same illness as Jon.   I made contact with Ernie to see if there was anything I could do to help.  As well as the work I do with Factor 50, I was also involved in the fundraising for Ernie.    Sadly, the illness was too much for both Jon and Ernie and both of them lost their fight against this devastating illness.  They were just 28 and 30 years old.

Since Jon and Ernie passed away, Factor 50 have been involved in several fund raising events.  We have done bucket collections, quiz nights, coffee mornings, and more events are planned.   We are aiming to provide funds to Dr Lorigan (the doctor who treated Jon and Ernie when they lived in the North) to enable him to bring a promising clinical  trial to the Christie Hospital.   We also have the first Factor 50 dinner planned for 25 April 2009.
As well as fund raising, we are aiming to bring heightened awareness of the dangers attributed to sun burn and the use of sunbeds and we hope that the information on the website is useful to you all.  There is the facility to make donations on line and in particular to make a donation in Ernie's name, this was requested by his family."
